Who is Bahá'u'lláh?Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith and the Manifestation of God for this Day. Born Mirza Husayn-'Ali on 12th November 1817 to a wealthy and noble family in Mazindaran, Iran. The son of a courtier, he was a descendent of the last Sassanian king. The name by which the world now knows Him means ..."Glory of God". At the age of 27 He became a follower of the Báb, the Forerunner of Baha'u'llah and Prophet-Founder of the Bábí Faith. After an attempt on the Shah's life by two misguided Bábís, in 1853 Bahá'u'lláh was imprisoned for four months in an underground prison, where He received a Revelation, through a dream of a Maid of Heaven, that He was the One promised by the prophecies of the past. After His release he was banished from his homeland, and went to Baghdád with some of His family and companions. Here, in the Garden of Ridván in 1863, Bahá'u'lláh declared to His followers that He was the Promised One. He spent most of his earthly life as an exile, and as a prisoner. However, he gained an ever increasing following throughout the Middle East. In spite of the hardship and isolation, He continued His proclamation to the rulers of the earth and the revelation of the foundation-principles which would bring about a new world order of society founded on the unity of mankind, equality and justice. His teachings were to gradually spread worldwide. His Writings are considered by Bahá'ís to be Revelation from God and some 15,000 of His Tablets have so far been collected.
He ascended at the age of seventy-four
on 29th May, 1892, naming His eldest son, 'Abdu'l-Bahá, as His successor
and authorized Interpreter of His Teachings.
