I am sure many of you know of other rinks around the country, which were purchased, then demolished by supermarkets and despite prior promises, never replaced! Read the article dated 7.10am Thursday 15th October, entitled "Streatham Ice Rink Could Close Within Weeks!". Follow the link to the Streatham Guardian website and put 'ice rink' into the search box to find and read it.
Redskins first game
The first Redskins home game will be on September 13th against our old rivals Invicta. With two of last year's Redskins wearing Invicta shirts this season, the new Redskins team will be keen to demonstrate Streatham's renowned resilience. Face off is at 6.45.All the fixtures can be seen here.
New Man of the Match sponsor
The Greyhound Bar is our new Man of the Match Sponsor for this coming season. Not only that, but they are our official pub for a post-game drink. Come along after the game and you'll be able to meet players as well as other supporters. Turn right out of the rink and it's just 300m down the road at the second set of traffic lights.Em Revel memorial game
As most of you will know, last season the Streatham Redskins sadly lost perhaps their greatest supporter and best friend - Em Revel. Without Em, it is safe to say that there probably wouldn't be senior hockey at Streatham. On Sunday 23rd August, Redskins old and new will assemble at the Streatham Ice Arena to play a match in celebration of Em's life. We hope that Em's close family and friends will be able to attend. The match will feature some very famous players from the past, alongside your favourite Redskins of today. Face-off, as always, will be 6.45 and the usual charge will be made at the door. Do come along and show your respect for all he did and your support to Margaret, Tracy and Mark, who, we are hoping, will be able to attend.
As a bonus the players from that match and any other Redskins, as well as players from the Bruins and Nightwolves, will be assembling at The Greyhound Bar on the corner of Greyhound Lane after the game; for an informal "meet the players" gathering. All fans are cordially invited to attend. There will be no charge on the door and the bar will be open until midnight.
Perhaps, at that party we can all raise a glass to Em.
Streatham Under-12 Playoffs
The Webmaster must apologise for posting this item so late. The U12's came 2nd in their league (well done) which meant a play off against Cardiff who came 2nd bottom in the A league, to see who plays A league next year. Cardiff won 6-2 at Streatham, a good game played in the right spirit. Both teams were a credit to their respective clubs. Cardiff had a slightly larger squad and they scored first. From then on Streatham were playing catch-up, but they were only one goal down for most of the game, until Cardiff scored three quick goals very near to the end. The game was played in a very good spirit and neither team gave up right to the end. Afterwards, because there was time and just for the fun of it, they had a penalty shoot out, which was great to watch.
Then the U12's went down to Cardiff for a 7:30 Face-off in the second leg of the playoffs. A very small squad of players were faced with a uphill battle after going down 2 - 0 early, but they rallied back for a 4 -2 win. An excellent end to the season winning our last game. Cardiff won the overall 2 game total but we came out of Cardiff with our heads up and satisfied with the win. Well done to Troy and the team.
Redskins trials announced
Streatham Redskins will be holding trials for this English National League Division 1 team on Wednesday 8th July and Wednesday 15th July. Any players who would like an invitation to try out for the team should complete the CV in the format found here and send it by e-mail to Darryl Morvan, Head Coach, at HeadCoach@streathamicehockey.com.Triallists must be at the rink between 21.00hrs and 21.30 in order to complete documentation and pay the £10 ice fee. This will be offset against EIHA registration costs if the player is signed. Off-ice briefing will be at 22.00 and players will be on the ice from 22.15hrs to 00.15hrs.
The trials will not be open to the public, though we will try and keep all our fans abreast of any signings. If you are a fan and would like to be updated ahead of the pack, make sure you are signed up to our e-alert service.
Training for the team will commence on Wednesday 22nd July and continue up to and throughout the season.
Next season, Streatham will also be icing a Division 2 team, the Streatham Bruins. This will be a team for our U18 players to develop in, but will also be able to accept slightly older players. If the Head Coach does not consider that your CV is of the standard that he is looking for, or if at trials it becomes apparent that you will not be selected, he may refer you to the Coach for the Bruins, Barry Spours.
Lambeth Country Show
The Lambeth Country Show takes place on the weekend of 18/19 July at Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, and as usual the Supporters Club will have a stall, trying to both make some money for the team and publicise ice hockey. If you can help on the stall for a few hours or have bric-a-brac they can sell, contact Graham or Alan through the website.Streatham ice hockey history serialised
Allam Palmer has made his book "Eat 'Em Raw" available to the club, and it will appear over the summer in stages as it is converted to web format. You can find it here.Another appeal for information
Justin Shaw has asked me if I know the shirt number that his Grandfather George Shaw wore in 1934-36. To be honest, I can't remember that far back. Does anyone know? if so, please email me.Here's a reminder that Tracy, the daughter of Harry Frank Wilde (born 1939), has got in touch with the club asking for help putting together a scrapbook of his life for his widow. He played for the Redskins in his youth and if anyone can help with photos or newspaper cuttings she would be very grateful. You can make contact with Tracy directly by email at t.clampitt@blueyonder.co.uk or through the webmaster.

REDSKINS PLAYER AWARDS
For anyone who is unaware, Shane Kemp was elected both Supporters Club and Players’ Player of the Year. Additionally we had a new trophy to honour Em Revel who was a fantastic supporter of the Redskins. One of his main passions was to see young players coming through and improving year on year. Consequently the Em Revel Trophy was awarded to Rupert Quiney as the Most Improved Player of last season.
Redskins awards
Last Friday saw the end-of-season party, and with it came the annual awards. Head coach Warren Trunchion, in consultation with the coaching team, selected the following winners:The coach's player of the year silver award went to Joe Johnston. "Joe has consistently carried the weight of expectations of the team and supporters on his back and his points speak for themselves; more than any other Streatham player and 8th in the league, even though he only played 22 of the games before injury took him out. A natural leader"
The coach's player of the year gold award went to Barry Spours. "Barry has had one of the most difficult jobs of the season, as assistant coach, player and latterly, captain. He moved from the third line to make a serious impact on our points and led the team both on the ice and off. He exceeded expectations, scored some important goals and took the pressure - and the hits - away from others. (Barry didn't know he was being considered for this!)"
Coach's Player of the Year - Platinum Award - Shane Kemp "Shane has been the backbone of the team, one of the people who made things happen for us this season. Players came to rely on him to pull magic out of his blocker and that's what he did, all season, for team and fans alike. A staggering 1472 minutes in goal, more than all but one of the netminders in the league, he faced an average of 34 shots per game and still had a save rate of 90%. What a player!"
The coach's most improved player, silver award went to Casimir Madren-Britton. "Cas has improved again this season and for him, at his age, to have a regular shift AND make the difference in games that he had made is a great achievement. People tend to forget how young he is but he can still stand up to the rigours of teams like Invicta and he can hold his head up, look back at the great strides he's still making and forward to more progress."
The coach's most improved player, gold award went to Liam Rasmussen. "Liam had a difficult job to do this season, but he was prepared to step up and do it. He came from the third line to become a key player, but one who was not afraid to ask and learn from those around him. There is still a lot to come from Liam and as he improves yet more he will get more consistent and with that comes confidence. There is a lot more to come from Liam - he's no longer a rookie but one to watch."
Most Improved Player - Platinum Award - Rupert Quiney "Rupert has a real willingness to learn and has wanted to progress and improve - and he has. He's moved up from the third line to being the most consistent defender we've got and yet he's still got so much more to give. He's cemented his position and can expect to be in a commanding role within the team next season."
"Well done to all these players, and to the rest, who have given so much over the season. It's a shame that we haven't got enough trophies for everyone"
In addition to the coach's awards, the following awards were also given out:
Supporters Club Player of the Season - Shane Kemp
Committee Player of the Season - Shane Kemp
Redskins nostalgia
Martin Harris has kindly supplied me with team photos and details from the eighties. We now have photos of every Redskins team since they adopted the name in 1976 to the present with the exception of 1978-79, 1979-80 and 1983-84. Can anyone supply these? Meanwhile, click here to see the past teams.[top] [home page] [home fixtures] [find us] [contact us]
