Shotokan was founded by Gichin Funokoshi and was introduced to the Japanese around 1915 when Master Funokoshi and other leading Okinawan masters journeyed to Japan to demonstrate their art and in doing so, formally introduced to the world an effective system of unarmed combat.
In 1936 Funokoshi established the "Shotokan" in Tokyo and this eventually led to the inauguaration of the Japan Karate Association in 1955 with Funokoshi as Cheif Instructor, where he remained untill his death in April 1957, at the age of 88
