------- True Lies -------

Story: Harry Tasker is a top agent for the Omega Sector, a secret government organisation that that combats terrorist threats to the USA. Despite this his family thinks he is a dull computer salesman. That is until a fanatical terrorist organisation called the Crimson Jihad, led bu Abu Aziz, steals some nuclear warheads and threatens to detonate them inside the U.S. unless their demands are met.

The player controls Harry though ten levels, some of which feature in the movie and some that don't (more on this later). The game is played from an overhead viewpoint and the game plays like a less frantic Chaos Engine.

Graphics: The quality of the environments and backgrounds vary from each level. The Chateau, Mall and China Town levels are quite detailed and well produced. On the other hand the Park, Subway and Dock levels are sparsely populated and with the levels being quite large they can get a bit dull.

The sprites are well drawn with some fliud animation. Some of the highlights being civilians diving under their newspapers when they hear gunfire.

Rating = 7/10

Sound: Although the in-game music isn't terrible it just feels as though something is missing. It lacks any epic feel. You may be stuck in a huge gunfight with a boss but the music is still sedate. Once you get stuck into the game you don't really notice it anyway.

The sound effects are of a high quality. The explosions are loud and well made. Each weapon has it's own sound effect for when it is being fired and they sound true to each weapon.

Rating = 6/10

Controls: Quite a simple control layout that is easy to master which is good as the game can get quite hard, fast. The directional pad controls Harry's movement, X allows you to perform a roll, Y locks and allows you to fire your weapons one way whilst running another, B fires the currently selected weapon, A, L and R swaps your weapon. When you are in the Harrier you can move it using the directional pad, fire your cannons with the B button and fire your rockets using the A button.

The controls are fluid and responsive. I had no problems blasting away the enimies in this game.

Rating = 9/10

Playability: To start with I thought this was going to be just another dull film license. I hadn't even finished the first level when I realised that it was in fact quite fun. Shooting the enemies whilst not harming the civilians is enjoyable and challenging although after the Park level there are no civilians in the levels anymore.

The choice of weapons on offer is not exactly large but it is varied. Your inventory contains a pistol, sub-machine gun, shotgun, grenades, mines and a flamethrower. Each of these weapons is different allowing you to alter your attack strategies depending on your opponents and their attack patterns. Just running at the enemies guns blazing gets you killed quite quickly.

One of the only bad points here is that the game doesn't follow the plot of the movie too well near the latter half of the game. Now normally I wouldn't mind but it those levels that reflect badly on the rest of the game as they are dull, too long and become repetitive quite quickly. Also there doesn't seem to be much variety in each level. There is only the Harrier level that allows any change in the gameplay. If there were more vehicle sections then maybe it could have broken up some of the later boring levels to make the game more appealing.

Rating = 7/10

Value for money: Although the game starts off quite easy when you get to the larger levels such as the Park I realized that the game has become quite hard. I tended to find that if I took my time to learn the enemies patterns and exploit there weaknesses I could progress through the game at a fair rate.

I did however start to lose interest later in the game and it was a good while before I went back to it due to the dullness of some of the later levels.

Despite its flaws I still find may self going back to it occasionally for the odd play at it.

Rarity: I bought my copy from a small independant games shop many years ago for £12. Since then I have found the game quite uncommon. I haven't seen it in a shop since but on ebay there is usually at least once copy on at any one time. They seem to sell for only around £5 for a complete copy.

Overall: A very under rated game. It provides some fun entertainment and the combat is surprisingly deep for this style of game. If you can overlook the failings of some of the later levels it can a last a long time.
