------- Kabuki: Quantum Fighter -------

Story: This game is set some time in the future, where the computer that controls the defense of the planet Earth has been invaded by a mutating, evolving virus. You play Colonel Scott O' Connor who has been converted to raw data and has been placed inside the computer to destroy the virus.

The game takes place over six horizontally and vertically scrolling levels. These contain enemy viruses that must be destroyed and environmental hazards that should be avoided. At the end of there is a showdown with the end of level guardian.

Graphics: The graphics for each stage are nicely detailed and due to the use of a dark colour palette it gives the game a more moody atmosphere, which suites the game well as you are in a computer's virus infected circuitry after all. The only problem I have with the background graphics is that they do not change much in between levels. A lot of the levels look the same making the game a little visually dull later on in the game.

The main character is very well drawn and excellently animated with each attack and flip looking realistic. The enemies look good too but they do not have as much attention to detail with regards to their animation as the main character, but since they have a limited amount of actions this can go unnoticed.

Sound: The music tracks within the game are pretty much standard fare but they do help to enhance the atmosphere of the game.

The majority of the sound effects are fine with some more suited to their applications than others such as the swishing effect made when you use your default attack. The effects for some of the more powerful weapons are a bit disappointing though as the weapons just don't sound as though they are very strong.

Controls: A basic platform game control method is used in this game with the directional pad used to control your character, button B is the fire button and button A is used to jump. Select allows you to switch between your available weapons and start is used to pause the game. The controls themselves are responsive and they allow more advanced moves such as wall climbing and swinging to be used with precision and ease.

Playability: Whilst playing this game it is easy to see how much effort has gone into the level design. They are well set out with a good use of moving platforms, conveyor belts, platforms you can hang and swing from, flame pits and other hazards that make the levels varied and more exciting.

The weaponry on offer is impressive with each one having its own situation for it to be used, such as dynamite that can be thrown at enemies below you to you hair which can be whipped at enemies within close range. You gain new weapons between each level, which makes you want to see what new piece of equipment you will receive next.

I really like playing this game as it is fun and different enough from other platformers to make it stand out.

Value for money: The game itself is quite challenging. You have to memorize quite a lot of the levels layouts but most of the time quick reflexes will get you out of the majority of situations. It is fairly difficult on the later levels but for the most part you just seem to die, learn from your past mistake and get further on you next go, which will ensure you don't get bored of it.

The six levels are fairly large but I don't see myself going back to it all that often when it has been completed.

Rarity: I only paid £2.99 for this game, complete, at a Gamestation so for that price it was well worth it. With the current price rises at Gamestation though it would be more likely that you would find it at a £4.99 price mark for a complete copy.

The best place to buy this would be ebay. It is a very underrated game and there is not much demand for it meaning they are quite easy to find and the price for a complete copy would be in the range of £1.50 to £4.00.

Overall: A great, underrated platform game that is different enough to stand out from the crowd of other generic platformers. It is challenging, addictive and very cheap. Any game where you can whip enemies into submission with your long hair is worthy of a place in anyone's NES collection.
