Story:
There
is no story here. Just a series of four shooting mini games that you
use the Light Phaser with. On each stage you must shoot a required
number of targets and if you shoot less than that number then it is
game over.
In
the first stage you must shoot birds, in the second stage the targets
are balloons and blimps, the third stage you have to hit balls that
are running through a tunnel system before they leave the screen and
the last stage is set in space where you must blast spaceships equipped
with shields.
I
think there are 24 rounds in total, although I cannot confirm this,
the stages repeat themselves over the course of the game only they
get harder. The enemies become faster and some of them start moving
in different patterns.

Graphics:
The
graphics are a mixed bag really. The backgrounds for the levels are
some of the most simple I've seen for the system. The hot air balloons
in the ariel attack stage are dreadful and look as though they were
made in minutes using Paint. Despite the simplicity of the backgrounds
they are very vibrant and colourful and once I was concentrating on
shooting the targets I hardly noticed their shortcomings. Also, it
makes the sprites stand out a lot more so they are not getting lost
in the background.
Although
the backgrounds are very basic the sprites used in the game are completely
different. They are excellently drawn and their animation is quite
good too. It's a shame this kind of effort wasn't put into the backgrounds
though.

Sound:
The
in game music is okay, very mediocre but it suits the game quite well
and you don't tend to notice it once you are concentrating on the
screen. The game has very few sound effects due to its simplicity
as I only noticed gunshots and explosions but these are well produced.

Controls:
Well,
not much I can really put here apart from aim the gun and pull the
trigger to fire. Whilst playing I noticed all my shots were accurate
so you can't blame a poor performance on the software as such.

Playability:
The
game is quite entertaining despite it not being one of the best shooting
games for the system. There is an impressive amount of variety in
each of the four stages which helped to sustain my interest. It is
quite challenging and there are plenty of cool graphical touches such
as the holes that appear in the background of the stage whenever you
miss a shot and the way the balloons get knocked away by the blasts
from your weapon. It is things like this that make it a more interesting
shooter.
The
only downsides are with only four different stages it doesn't take
long for things to get dull and I was soon putting it away to play
other games. Also the game becomes more of a memory test than a game
where skillful reflexes are needed in the later stages.

Value
for money: The
game itself can be rather hard as the difficulty level increases very
rapidly. I found it to be round 6, in one of the ball maze levels,
when I started to realize that it wasn't going to be easy and consequently
lost. I have no problems with playing a game through again and again
to try and beat my record but this one is ultimately boring and I
can't see anyone playing it for more than a few days once the novelty
has worn off.

Rarity:
I
bought my copy, complete, for £3.99 in an independent games
store about six years ago so back then it was quite a good price.
Nowadays I wouldn't want to pay more than £2 - £2.50 for
it.
It
is fairly uncommon and I haven't seen it in a Gamestation store but
I would assume they would sell it within the region of £1.99
to £3.99.
The
best place to get this would be ebay. A few copies surface every month
and you would be looking at a price of 99p to £4 for a complete
copy.

Overall:
A
fun game that just gets a bit tedious over time. Certainly not one
of the best Light Phaser games. Unless you are getting it for a collection
I would recommend getting Operation Wolf or Space Gun first.
