------- Buggy Run -------

Story: As this is a racing game there is no story. The game consists of three modes of play. There is the one player mode in which you can take part in tournaments to earn points and make your way through the beginner level to the experienced races. You also earn money to spend in the parts shop to improve your car's engine, transmission, steering, suspension and tires. You can also purchase mines, which are dropped behind your car and temporarily slow down opponents, and nitros that give a quick burst of speed. This mode also has a freerun mode and and vs option.

The two player mode allows you and a friend to race in courses across four different zones. This mode allows you to assign experience points to your driver to affect their driving capabilities.

Finally there is a battle mode which puts you and three other cars in a small, lava surrounded arena. You then have to ram the other cars into the lava in order to win.

Graphics: The game uses an isometric viewpoint in one player mode. The graphics here are detailed and colourful and the tracks themselves look very impressive. The scrolling is also smooth and the only sprite flicker I noticed was on the starting lights if they are on the same level as a car. The only problem I could find is that sometimes it can be hard to tell which way your car is pointing making crashing into a wall quite easy.

In multiplayer and battle mode the viewpoint changes to include the entire track in the same vain as Super Off Road. Although the tracks and backgrounds still look good the cars and items are really too small. It would have been better to have the same view as in the one-player mode with a split screen but given the limitations of the machine it probably would not have been possible.

Sound: The sound effects are the weakest point of this catagory. They are weak and don't really sound impressive at all. Especially the sound you hear when you use a nitro.

As for the music, although there are alot of different soundtracks none of them are really spectacular but neither do they annoy or get tedious. My favorite music has the be the track that plays when you are on the last lap. It is catchy and fast and really adds to the tension especially if you are still fighting for first place.

Controls: This game uses a very simple control setup. The directional button (D-Button) is used to steer the car. Button 1 is the accelerate and Button 2 uses either a mine or a nitro cylinder. These simple controls make the game ideal for multiplayer games as anyone can just pick up and play with no experience needed.

The only problems I found were that the steering can seem a bit slow until you upgrade it in the shop. Also with the pad only having two button you cannot choose between the mines and nitros mid-race.

Playability: In all modes this game is great fun. The one player tournament mode kept me playing right to the end. The races can be very frantic as the opponents can be quite tough to beat unless you upgrade your car well. The inclusion of the two items is also welcome but the game can be won without them with some skillful driving. The only major downside to the game is that it is very short and quite easy if you can get all the car parts up to their full levels and the game ending is non existant.

The 2 player mode is a great addition to the package. I think it is better than Super Off Road thanks to the many items that appear on the track making it more of a challenge. There are also more hazards such as lava, waterfalls and turn tables. It is perfectly suited to people who have little interest in games as it is very easy to learn and enjoyable too.

The battle mode is the weakest of the three. With no weapons and only three arenas it does not take long to see all it has to offer. It is quite challenging though and in two player mode it can be good.

Value for money: I wouldn't pay too much for it. Although it is a good game it is way too short especially if you are playing it on your own. There are plenty of game modes though to hold your interest, just don't expect to be playing it for more than a week.

Rarity: This game is arguable very rare. Only released in Europe some collectors have found it very hard to find. I have had three copies of the game at some point or another. I bought my first copy, complete, from Gamestation for £1.00.

On ebay the price can vary tremendously. The price usually averages around £15 - £20 but I saw one on ebay recently sell for a whopping £51. Way too expensive.

If you are a collector it is worth buying due to it's rarity and it is a fun little game too. If you are buying it to play I wouldn't pay too much for it due to it being a very short game.

Overall: A great game only marred by the fact that it is way too short. If it was longer it could challenge Micro Machines for the title of best Master System racing game. If you have to chance to get it do, just don't expect it to last you a long time.
