------- Balloonacy -------

Story: No story as such in this game. Guide a helium filled balloon through each screen avoiding contact with walls and enemies. Hitting any of these results in you popping, losing a life and restarting at the beginning of the level. You must exit through a window but first you must turn off the electric barrier infront of it by flicking a switch located elsewhere on the screen.

Graphics: Each level is played out over one screen. The levels consists of tile made walls over a black background. This makes the levels look quite basic but I don't feel that extravagant graphics would suit this type of game due to it being quite basic in structure.

All the sprites are well drawn and are animated well, with no slowdown or any noticeable flicker. The only glitch I have noticed is that when you start the game for the first time the balloon and the exit window are actually missile sprites. This clears up after a few seconds though. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this bug though.

Sound: Have only noticed three soundtracks so far whilst playing the game.

The first is present at the opening screen. Although it sounds a bit basic and boring at the start, it kicks into a right tasty groove when left for a few moments. The second plays during the gameplay. Like the title screen soundtrack it does take a little while to get going but once it does it has a good beat that doesn't distract you too much from the action on the screen. Finally there is a short track for the game over screen which is quite a fun little tune.

Sadly there are no sound effects but I do think that they would be drowned out by the in game music. Also since I never got past level three I am unsure if the music changed during the game.

Controls: Very simple to learn but quite tricky to master. You only use the joystick or in my case the directional buttons on my control pad. With this you can move the balloon in eight directions. This sounds simple enough but the controls are too sensitive as one tap in any direction can send your balloon flying straight into an obstacle as it moves too fast. Maybe if the fire button was implemented so that when held down the balloon could be moved at a much slower rate making negotiating some of the more tricky areas a little easier.

Playability: As much as I want to like the game I find it very hard to. It is a simple idea that should be fun but due to the very high difficuly level, tough learning curve and poor controls it is too frustating and did not sustain my interest very long.

I feel that if the controls were improved it would still provide plenty of challenge but each time you failed it would be due to lack of skill rather than the balloon's movement.

Value for money: The game itself is very cheap, being £1.99 brand new, and is worth it for a quick go every now and again. The game has quite a challenge, which in the long run I have found to be quite annoying but does ensure that it will last quite a while before it is completed.

Rarity: Definitely not rare at the moment. It can be still be bought on a cassette from www.cronosoft.co.uk for a mere £1.99.

You never know though, it could become collectable in years to come.

Overall: Too frustating for my liking. If you can get into it then it is a fun little game. The price tag means that you could buy it and if you don't like it then you don't really lose a lot of money.
