2008 - Having spent a lot of time partially restoring the old girl, I stuck my head underneath to check out the "couple of rust spots" on the underside. What I found was not good...

Both chassis rails were rusted at the front under the footwells.

Passenger side rail had completely gone - what's holding the car off the ground? Lada bangers always snap here.

Driver side is not so bad, rail has been patched before but rust has spread. Note the home-made outrigger.

The driver's side floor was rusted through on a previously repaired section. It was repaired as a double skin which has acted as a moisture trap.

This is a bit of a mess. I'll end up with a patch on a patch

The footwells actually looked OK on the inside, considering the floor leaked and the carpets were soaking wet.

The footwells just need a good clean-up and maybe a small patch or two

Good welding last time from Cottage Street Garage, Macclesfield

The inner sills were rough in both front footwells, although the passenger side was worse.

Passenger side inner sill needs a visit from the welding fairy

For a 22 year old worthless banger, this kind of corrosion was just not worth fixing. Especially when you own two other classics which both need work. So the tough decision was made.

Thanks to the guys at www.lada.co.uk forum, I tied up with some banger racers from Crewe, and a deal was done. I'm proud to say that it started up OK and drove on the transporter under its own power.

Bye Bye Riva

Bye Bye Riva

Yes I was gutted, but you can see from the pictures that the car needed a lot of work. It was time to move on.... Hoping to get some pics of it as a banger!!! Watch this space.
