Why have tuition and how is it given?

Many students who come to me have lost confidence in the subject.  This is for a variety of reasons. They may have missed work through illness, the teacher’s explanation may not have been sufficient or the pace of the class has been too quick for them. By having one to one lessons it is possible to stop and ask questions at any point without feeling that the class is all watching.

Content

The content of each lesson is dictated by the student’s requirements. For those having a regular weekly lesson, I go through what has been covered at school during the previous week, giving further explanation where necessary.  If there have been no particular problems one week, then I may review an earlier topic that they have found difficult or as exams approach I go through past papers. For those coming for a few lessons or during the holidays I usually establish at the first lesson what we need to cover and then we work through it as the pace dictates. For those learning a topic or module from scratch, I produce a scheme of work for them.

Notes

While teaching I write many notes, which the student takes home. I encourage them to put this in a separate A4 file so that they can build up a comprehensive folder which can be used for school work and later revision. As exam preparation I provide past papers and solutions (having established that this is not repeating work they may be set at school). These are provided at no extra cost.

Homework

This varies from student to student. For those having weekly lessons for A level or GCSE I do not usually set any, as they have enough of their own school work and coursework.  However I may sometimes give out a sheet for them to do to reinforce a topic that they have not covered in much depth at school. For those in lower years, who come in the holidays, I usually do set some work as this keeps their brain active between sessions and consolidates what I have taught them.  For those learning directly from me with no other input I expect much to be done outside lessons, in order that we get through the syllabus as quickly as possible.

Duration and Location

Most sessions are for one hour. There is usually time to pause for a refreshment break. In this way I find that even younger students are able to manage the length of the session, having been fed with a biscuit to sustain them!

I teach from home, in a room designed for teaching.  There are two reasons why I do not travel to student’s homes. I have all my resources and particularly my photocopier immediately available and also I am able to teach in a quiet environment where the student is ready to work.  There is a room next door, where parents can wait, but they rarely do so. They tend to return home or go shopping nearby.

Feedback and Support

I am happy discuss my student’s progress at any time with their parents, by phone or in person. Sometimes this means that I am also able to give wider advice as to how my students are developing and what subjects or courses might be suitable in future. Some parents value this contact as third party advice, away from the demands of school.

When a younger student has finished a set of lessons, say during one holidays, they should then be able to manage the next term without further support.  However if ever there is a topic that they are struggling with, I hope they can use me as ‘phone a friend’ and arrange a lesson to sort out their problem.
