About
the set
The
set is a basement. It is a low-rent location in a run-down area of
town. The identity of the town is unimportant. The place might
previously have been a travel agency or a beauty parlour. It has not
been redecorated for some time but Don (the owner) keeps it pretty
good. He has pride in his store even though business isn't great. The
store contains a variety of secondhand items, generally of little
value. The play is set in 1975 so quite a lot of the stuff may now
look 'retro' or 'kitsch', and therefore may now be more desirable than
it was back then. That's the way it goes. The temptation to make the
shop shabby has been resisted - that it is a junkshop is metaphor
enough.
The set is not based on any particular source, although in some
respects (and in some matters of detail) it was influenced by visits I
made to junk shops in Ohio in the summer of 2001. Eternal thanks to
Miss Terri Ford- the Glory of the Continent, and Peerson's Antiques,
Cincinnati.
