Visited : Nearly every time we go to stay with Grandma and Granddad Wormald (about three times a year).
Their Website :- NRM - National Railway Museum

Great !
Two huge main halls either side of a busy road connected by underpass. One is mainly engines, the second is set up like a station with both engines and carriages.
A new third hall 'The Works' has recently opened allowing the viewing of the restoration work, a display on making engines and another on signaling. Best of all is the ability to view the current signaling and points setting for York railway station and the ability to see trains come and go.
There are many other facilities (See below).

Replica Rocket on a demonstration run |
Short run operating. Seems to alternate between the 'Lady Nan' a small saddle tank pulling a guards van (standing room only) or a replica of the Rocket pulling a truck (standing room only again).
The largest collection in the country !
The largest collection in the country ! Includes a permanent Royal carriages display.
The whole place is an engine shed !

The whole place is a Museum - the best in the country.
Only an average size. Disappointing for such a major attraction.
Situated on a 'platform' in the new hall. Large, nice but a little pricey, but you watch videos of old trains while you eat !
Also a children's area with non-stop Thomas videos while you eat your sandwiches !
Clean, fresh and plenty of them.
