Their Website :- Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Summary

Something nice to add on to a Lake trip

Departing Haverthwaite

Arriving at Lakeside

Site

Lakeside is simple, but right next to the boat terminus.

Newby Bridge Halt is much of anything.

Haverthwaite is their main centre of operations.  It's also got an interesting tunnel right at the end of the platform.

Ride

Nothing special, but connecting to the boat at the end of Windermere makes up for it.

Engines

Some good sized engines, including one called David !  They also have "No. 20" which is Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive.

Rolling Stock

Only modern-ish carriages seen.

Engine Shed

At Haverthwaite.  Nice little selection crammed into a shed.  Also a few interesting lorries outside.

Museum

None found

Shop

At Haverthwaite.  Cramped but interesting

Catering

Had a nice drink of the platform at Haverthwaite waiting for the return train.  Also picnic benches on the other side of the line.

Toilets

Not tested.

Guide Book

Excellent !  It's cheap, got 32 pages full of colour pictures, a history of the line, a description of the line and a stock list.  What more could you want ?

Other Facilities

At Lakeside there's an Aquarium, but we didn't go in.  And, of course, there's the opportunity for a trip up Windermere on a boat.
