Nottingham is built on a funny sort of rock which is easy to dig. This means people used to dig houses of the the rock all over the city. We went to see a number of connected caves under a shopping centre. The entrance is is small and at the top of the shopping centre. You pay and then get a hard hat, and one of those talking hand set things. You have to enter a number on the hand set corresponding to each room or case you go in. You then go down some spiral stairs. The first 'room' is an air raid shelter full of things from the war. Down some more steps and you're into the old caves. We saw a Tannery (with stinky cow skin), Cellars of a pub and an old Victorian house, as well as the front of the house. The weirdest bit was being 'underground; but next to a wall knowing that behind the wall, people were shopping! It didn't take long and we went around twice. Building : Underground caves Contents : Fair Toilets : None Cafe : None Shop : Small. I bought some crystals. Guide Book : Crowds : Just a few other groups wandering around. Best Bit : The pub games in the pub cellar. Worst Bit : The smelly box.
Dad's Comment : Short, sweet & right next to the shopping centre for mum ! |
