Cogent is dedicated to both the funding and implementation of the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the market place on an independent basis. Carefully selected innovative research and development projects form our core technologies. Established in 1982, initially Cogent worked closely with the Association of Independent Contract Research Organisations (AICRO). Twelve member establishments entered into a collaboration agreement which gave Cogent first refusal on projects requiring external development finance for commercial exploitation. Bridging the gap from lab to market remains Cogent’s main strength.

More recently Cogent has collaborated with a number of the most prestigious universities in the UK, both funding projects and providing expertise in the marketing and licensing of technology. For example, Cogent together with Advent and the University of Oxford founded ISIS Innovation Ltd and Cogent remains a member of the ISIS Innovation Society. In addition Cogent has set up marketing subsidiaries to enable optimum exploitation of specific technologies and entered into joint venture agreements, such as the recently formed LBL and Calzyme partnership for the marketing for LBL's diagnostic capabilities.
