The main places to get cheap furniture for your flat or house in Bedford

There are web based groups that advertise free stuff which includes a lot of furniture at these addresses :--

Freecycle Group - Bedford UK - This is a Yahoo group which covers all of bedfordshire. You need to register with them to get access, but you only need to put in a username and any email address. You need your own transport (most of the time) to get whatever is being given away to your home. They don't often give away cars or vans, but it does happen occasionally, and you can post adverts on the site to ask for whatever you need.

Luton Free Stuff - This is not a web site as such, but an RSS news feed that sends posts to your web browser (like short emails). They do the same thing as the FreeCycle group, in that they cover all of Bedfordshire. You need your own transport (most of the time) to get whatever is being given away to your home. They don't often give away cars or vans, but it does happen occasionally, and you can post adverts on the site to ask for whatever you need, as above.

I-recycle - The aim of I-recycle is to provide a central point for people offering items free of charge that they no longer require or need. The passing on of these items reduces the amount of usable goods going to landfill sites across the UK. This site also offers subscribers the opportunity to request unwanted items.

BECHAR Day Centre
12 Prebend St
Bedford
MK40 1QW
Tel: 01234 365 955
MAP

Bechar finds, picks up, stores and delivers (free of all charges if you're unable to pay for it) furniture for you. If it a big and/or heavy item (like a sofa, bed, cupboard, etc) then they will help YOU to lift it up the stairs, unless you are disabled. In that case, let them know this in advance and they will organise some additional help to get it up the stairs.

Furniture Link
1a Gadsby Street
Bedford
MK40 3HP
Tel: 01234 353 578
MAP

These are not as cheap as they used to be, but there are different (lower) prices if you are on benefits, so take proof of your benefits with you (i.e. the letter you got from the DWP stating your now in receipt of JSA or Income Support or Pension Credit). However, since one of the guys there injured his back lifting a sofa up some stairs, they will deliver to an address, but they WON'T carry it up the stairs, so you'll need someone with you at the time of delivery to help you get it up the stairs if you live in an upstairs flat.

There are other places such as the shops that sell second hand furniture like the one opposite QD and the police station (by the bus station), but their prices are a bit more than those at Furniture Link

Aladins Cave (Luton) -
