Lubing the Chain
Cleaning and lubricating the chain is one of those tedious jobs on a VFR (or any chain driven bike for that matter) that just has to be done and we all hate doing, however with a little preparation it can take just a few minutes.
This is a job best done AFTER a ride out (or the night before) so that there is sufficient time for the chain lube to "set" a little and saves a lot of the lube getting flung off.
Start by taping newspaper or paper towel behind the chain to the bottom suspension link.
Tape it to the brake hoses at the rear of the hub and lay a sheet of paper on the floor to collect any drips or over spray.

Stick a tiny piece of paper to the chain so that you know when it's been around one complete revolution and gently spray the inner chain links while turning the wheel with the other hand.
Once the chain has been round once, spray the outer links in the same manner.
Once you have been round the chain for the second time, and you are satisfied that the links have had a good coating, remove the paper marker and the paper masking to leave a nice shiny wheel devoid of any over spray.
If any over spray gets on the hub, clean it off immediately using paper tissue dampened with WD40 or paraffin. A really dirty chain can be cleaned first with paraffin (kerosene) and a small stiff brush. Regular treatment as outlined above should prevent the build-up of too much grime and keep the job short.
Nice and easy and just a few minutes work. If this is done every 300-400 miles your chain and sprockets will remain in good order for 2-3 times as long as if you neglect to do it.
