April 2007 Residents have given the thumbs up to night-time closure of Stoughton Recreation Ground in a survey, which follows a six-month trial at the park. As part of the Council’s priority to work with communities to clamp down on anti-social behaviour, the Council surveyed residents to get their views on whether closing the grounds between dusk and 7.30am was a good idea. The majority wanted to test the idea out and in a survey following the trial 85% wanted it to continue. Consequently the gates will be locked for the foreseeable future between 9.30pm and 7.30am. Chris Bruce, Head of Parks and Countryside comments, “Locking the gates has made a real difference to residents who have commented on the reduction of noise late at night. Littering and damage to the play area has reduced and the police have not reported any problems with young people gathering in other areas instead of the park. The Council is committed to tackling anti social behaviour and this is one example of a practical initiative which has really made a difference.” Press contact: Laurie Will, Strategic Projects Officer tel: 01483 444335; fax: 01483 444023; e-mail laurie.will@guildford.gov.uk For all the latest Guildford Borough Council news go to www.guildford.gov.uk and select "news"
