Stoughton Community Association 'area of benefit'

'Area of benefit' is a charity term that describes the area served by a community association.  For Stoughton Community Association it is defined as "Guildford Borough ward of Stoughton, past and present, and the adjoining urban neighbourhoods known as Chitty’s Common, Keens Lane, Pitch Place, Rydes Hill Road and Salt Box Road."

The SCA decided to define its 'area of benefit' as all the areas that are or have been considered part of Stoughton at some time, and is roughly the same as the old parish of Stoughton, and almost the same as the area defined by the previous community association that dissolved in 1985.

The whole area is now almost entirely urbanised and stretches into parts of Worplesdon and stopping more or less at the green belt.  The area includes those parts of Westborough ward that were part of the old Stoughton Parish, and some residents still consider part of Stoughton.

Residents living in 'adjoining urban neighbourhoods' know which ward they live in, but these wards change shape.  The 2003 boundary changes resulted in a major part of Stoughton ward becoming part Westborough.  Even before then there were residents of Westborough who considered themselves part of Stoughton, typically because of the old parish of Emmanuel Church, which is now part of Westborough, along with Stoughton Recreation Ground!

The 'area of benefit' proved too difficult for SCA to define using wards, roads or post-codes.  Therefore SCA decided to use a flexible definition and the map below to avoid doubt.

For more maps of the area see Stoughton Maps.
