Stoughton Community Association

Dear Resident

October 2008 #1

It would be great if you could print a copy of this newsletter and ask your neighbours if they have heard of SCA and would like a copy.

You are one of about 350 local residents to which SCA sends newsletters.  About 500 more have attended public meetings we have arranged, but not supplied a valid email address.  There are about 8,000 residents in Stoughton so we know this newsletter reaches only a small proportion.  Many do not use a computer.

We do not share our email list with anyone, and we only use our list to pass on news of activities and events in the area.

Remember, the clocks go back by one hour next weekend, at 1am on Sunday 26th October 2008.

Regards,

Ian Godfrey

SCA Secretary

An additional meeting for the Stoughton Area has been specially arranged as a result of the concerns raised at the last meeting in September. Friends of Stoughton

If you know any elderly person who perhaps has no family nearby and you feel would benefit from having more contact outside of their homes then please let us know. Secondly, if you would like to help, one Sunday afternoon a month, by driving elderly people to a volunteer’s home for tea, cakes and chat, and thus help combat the loneliness they can so often feel.

As you know SCA is a Charity with the main objective to make Stoughton a better place in which to live, therefore we wish to establish ‘Friends of Stoughton’. This simple idea, successful elsewhere, is about arranging a monthly afternoon tea in the home of another Stoughton resident. Unfortunately doctors, the police and Social Services are unable to tell us who we should be contacting because of the Data Protection Act. With your help, perhaps we can solve this problem.

Please, either email Maureen on mdhbell@talk21.com or telephone me on 01483 570275, and let her know at the earliest if you know anyone this proposal will benefit and also if you yourself are willing to help as a driver or to host a tea party.

Planning Applications STOUGHTON

Thank you for submitting your objections.  This has resulted in all recent applications being refused by planning officers.  We will keep you informed if applicants decide to appeal.

The number of applications has gone down drastically.  This may be because of the summer holidays, the credit crunch or our message is getting across.

Lewis News (123 Worplesdon Road, GU2 9XA) has applied to extend their opening hours until 10 o’clock in the evening and a 'to sell alcohol. This is likely to cause additional parking issues and increase in the number of youths hanging around causing problems. Details are posted in the shop window.   The closing date for representations is next Tuesday, 21st October.

2 Broomfield, Westborough There is a public hearing at 10am on 18th November at the council offices, Millmead.  The planning inspectorate will decide the outcome of an appeal on application 07/P/02538 for a two storey side extension to form 2 x 1 bedroom flats which caused some concern for local residents.

Carebase Home Carebase asked to meet with the association to discuss some planning amendments they wanted to make on the proposed home at the Stoughton Grange School site.  It was a good meeting and a model for how planning should be done.

Grange Road Gas Mains Works

The one-way and diversion is now removed and a new 4-way light system installed for work at the junction to begin, which should take 4 weeks.  A remaining section south of Waltham Avenue is due to complete very soon.

Long term solution for Grange Road?

SCA has received a number of emails supporting the one-way system, as well as some opposed to the scheme. This problem has been caused by poor planning in the past and will be impossible to fix without upsetting someone.

Surrey County Council Local Committee for Guildford is amongst other things responsible for budgeting of Guildford's traffic schemes, and it has approved using £5,000 of Cllr Pauline Searle's allocation "to conduct investigations into the feasibility of progressing a range of highways measures in Grange Road".  A survey cannot start until the gas works is complete.

The association and our councillors are working with Surrey County Council traffic department in looking at the impact on various schemes.   All parties are committed to full public consultation.

SCA Web-Site Improvements

The Local Committee has also approved a grant of £1,000 from Cllr Pauline Searle's allocation to fund improvements to the web-site, annual data protection fees, and keep it going for at least the next 3 years.  Work on this will start in December.  If you have any opinions about the web-site or ideas for new features, please let us know.
