Sports

Sports activities within the ATC can range from local events to national representation.

§        Cadets at 1140 (Steyning) Squadron can represent the Squadron either in local competition within Sussex Wing or at trials to be selected for the Sussex Wing teams.

§        Once the Sussex Wing teams have been selected they will participate against the other Wings in our region – namely Essex, Kent, London, Middlesex and Surrey.  For this a cadet is awarded a Wing Blue.  In most sports, the best cadets from each Wing are selected to represent the Region.

§        Cadets selected for London & South East Region (LASER) will compete against the other ATC Regions – namely North, Scotland & Northern Ireland, Wales & West, Central & East and South West.  For this a cadet is awarded a Region Blue.  As before, the best cadets are then selected to represent the Corps.

§         Corps representation varies by sport.  The swimmers compete against the best from the Army Cadets and Sea Cadets, the footballers take on an RAF team, the rugby team play a top Colts side and the athletes compete against a top athletics club.  Those gifted and lucky enough to represent the Corps receive a Corps Blue.

The ATC has a full calendar of sporting events – in addition to anything that we arrange locally either at the Squadron or with sister Squadrons.

§       The sporting calendar starts in September with the Swimming galas.

§       In the autumn the Football, Rugby, Hockey and Netball trials take place and then the competitions are spread out from October through to April.

§       December and January are usually set aside for the Cross Country championships.

§       The 5-a-side Football tournaments are in the Spring.

§       The Athletics meetings are usually scheduled for May and June.

Did you know that former Olympic and World champion in the 100m, Linford Christie, was an Air Cadet in London?  He held the Corps 100m and 200m records for many years until they were beaten by Commonwealth Gold medallist in the 200m,  Marcus Adam, also a cadet from London Wing.

Former England and British Lions rugby player (and RAF pilot) Rory Underwood, was also an Air Cadet.
