FlyingOnce a cadet has been enrolled and has completed their 1st Class Cadet training they are eligible to go Air Experience Flying (AEF). § AEF flights take place on RAF stations around the country and the aircraft used is the Grob Tutor. This is an excellent training aircraft where the student (cadet) sits next to the pilot so that they can get the maximum from the flight.
Grob Tutor § On a cadets first flight they will get to take the controls and will learn how to keep the aircraft straight and level and also undertake basic turns. § On a cadets second (and subsequent) flight(s) they will be introduced to advanced turns and aerobatic manoeuvres, such as the loop, barrel roll and Derry turn. § AEF is always scheduled into the summer camp programme. Therefore any cadet attending summer camp should gain some AEF experience. In recent years cadets attending summer camp at an RAF station have been flying in Hercules, VC10, Chinook and Puma aircraft. One year, we went flying for 3 consecutive days in the VC10 tanker doing air-to-air refuelling exercises. Our VC10 refuelled Tornados, Jaguars, another VC10 and Hercules aircraft and we were also refuelled by another VC10. That was an amazing 3 days. VC10 & Hercules Chinook & Pumas
Flying Scholarship Older cadets are eligible to apply for a Flying Scholarship (FS). This is an intense 20 hour flying course sponsored by the RAF. On successful completion of the course a cadet will be awarded their FS Wings and will be half way to a Privates Pilots License (PPL) if they wish to pursue flying further.
