Camps

Annual camp

Annual camp (often referred to as summer camp) takes place on an RAF station.  Every Squadron is allocated places at annual camp and those places are shared with other Squadrons within the Wing.

Annual camp is a great time to meet new people from other Squadrons who become good friends and you then meet them again at the various Wing sports and adventure training activities.

Annual camp provides every cadet with the opportunity to see the RAF in action.  Every programme, for every camp, is different but typically includes:

§        Flying.  Normally AEF, but sometimes additional flying depending on what goes on at the RAF station or one of its neighbouring stations.

§        Shooting.  Usually L98 shooting but sometimes .22 shooting can be arranged.

§        Section visits.  This is a good way to see what the RAF does.  You could spend some time with air traffic control, a flying squadron, the RAF Regiment, the fire section and the RAF police and their dog units.

§        There are often opportunities for a day or two gaining work experience at some stations.

§        A night exercise.

§        Plenty of sports and other competitions.

§        Inter-flight competitions including drill, best flight, best NCO and best cadet.

Overseas Camps

For the older and more senior cadets there are opportunities to go on an overseas camp to an RAF station abroad.  These camps are less formal that the UK based camps and you get to see local customs and sights.  The RAF has stations in Gibraltar and Cyprus that host overseas camps.

International Air Cadet Exchange

At the top end of the camp scale is the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE).  IACE is an exchange scheme where air cadets from all over the world go on an exchange (much like the French/German exchanges at school).  To be selected for IACE is a real privilege and in effect the cadets selected will be representing the ATC when they visit the exchange country.
