Adventure Training

Adventure Training plays a large part in a cadets life.

Regular Events

§        There are local events run by the Squadron which includes an annual basic camp and expedition/navigation training on the South Downs.

§        With the South Downs in easy reach we are able to plan many activities to take advantage of our location.

§        Sussex Wing runs an annual competition weekend at Crowborough Army Camp which comprises a number of adventure training activities and tasks.  Most Squadrons take part and 1140 (Steyning) Squadron is one of them.

§        Sussex Wing also runs an annual South Downs Challenge.  Originally planned to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the ATC, the event has been running since 1991.  Cadet teams take part in an overnight expedition across 50km of the South Downs.

§        The Squadron also takes part in the annual Charlton Chase night navigation competition organised by West Sussex Youth Service.  This usually takes place on the last weekend of January and in 2004, 1140 (Steyning) Squadron were the highest placed Air Cadet team, finishing 13th.

 Adventure Training Courses

The Air Cadets own two adventure training centres, one in Windermere in the Lake District and the other in Llanbedr, Snowdonia.   Both of these centres offer week long courses.  Sussex Wing runs courses at both centres on an annual basis and cadets from every Squadron have the opportunity to attend.

Both centres have excellent access to their National Park and, as a result, stunning scenery, the highest peaks in England and Wales, top quality rock climbing and abseiling locations and plenty of inland water.  The activities vary slightly at each centre but have included the following in recent years (subject to weather):

§          Mountain walking

§          Rock Climbing

§          Abseiling

§          Canoeing

§          Mountain Biking

§          Orienteering

§          Expeditions and camping

§          Caving

§          High ropes courses
