Caring for our Environment

We aim to provide a superior Island holiday experience and believe that a commitment to the environment, social responsibility, and sustainable tourism can bring direct benefits.

As such we:-

  • Encourage our visitors to recycle waste:- containers are provided for newspapers, magazines, glass and kitchen wastes. Guidance on local recycling is also provided in the Cottage.
  • Have replaced many filament lamps with low energy equivalents
  • Promote green transport to guests – see Contact and Booking.
  • Keep marketing material to a minimum. Most of our communication is via this website – brochures are only printed and distributed on request.
  • Use recycled, locally sourced and fair trade products where practicable
  • Support local environmental initiatives such as Gift to Nature.
  • Have recently joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme and achieved Gold level in recognition of our sustainable practices. Please refer to our Environmental & Social Responsibility policy.

Caring for our environment – travelling without a car:-

We are a member of the Isle of Wight Car Free Scheme. We encourage and support guests who travel to the island without cars by providing free foot passenger ferry tickets as part of their holiday booking.

There are bus services to Shorwell from Ryde, Newport and Yarmouth – route number 12. The bus stop is directly outside the cottage.

car free scheme

Visit the Isle of Wight Car Free Scheme website to see where you can get discounts to various attractions if you travel by bike, bus or train. Just show your bus or train ticket for your journey there, or your current Rover / Freedom ticket to get your discount. If you have a pass that allows free travel (such as the OAP pass), you will need to show the paper ticket that would have been issued to you when you boarded the bus. Cyclists who stay with us will be issued with a car-free pass to use. Taking car parking fees and fuel prices into consideration, buying a rover ticket for the week for all the family and getting discounts as you visit various attractions can make financial sense. So go on, break the car habit and explore the island in a different way!

Gift to Nature is responsible for a variety of conservation sites around the Island, their mission is to not only care for the Island’s wildlife but to also encourage everyone to get out and explore our fantastic countryside.

We are also a member of:-

Green Traveller

Greentraveller’s website provides information on how to have a green holiday, including holiday accommodation that is easy to reach via ferry, train and bus.

You can play your part too, why not shop locally? There is a great, friendly little village shop & post office counter in Shorwell or visit the well stocked Brighstone Village shop . Maybe have your local island produce delivered direct to the cottage? - see Real Island Foods
