News and progress

At the launch of the Pink Rose Appeal, we started off with £50,000 in the pot from an earlier appeal - leaving another £200,000 to be raised. At the beginning of January, another £25,000 had been raised through a variety of local fundraising events and by 18th January this had risen to £45,000. We are grateful to all who have helped us so far - and hope that more people will join in this community-wide effort to hit our target figure. As new events are organised and further funds are raised, we will be keeping you up to date with our progress on this website... so log on again soon to stay in touch. With £155,000 to raise and just a few months to do it in, now is the time for you to get involved. Here's the latest news:

Golfing success

FOLLOWING a successful Golf Day, organised by the Artie White Foundation, the appeal has been handed a cheque for £5,000 in honour of their pledge.

Thanks go to all involved in the event, as well as those who took part and enjoyed the day.

She's a winner!

PAMELA Hewitt was the lucky raffle winner who has been handed the great prize of a P&O MiniCruise. Well done to her, we hope she enjoys her prize!

Our target has been reached!

WITH the generous donations already made, pledges received and gifts of items for the new Breast Care Unit, the Pink Rose Appeal will shortly reach its target.

This is a fantastic achievement and thanks go to everyone who has given their support - every bit has counted!

Pink Rose Appeal Walk changes its name to avoid litigation

The Pink Rose Appeal Walk, formerly called the Pink Rose Appeal Moonwalk, has now been renamed as The Pink Rose Appeal Walk but will go ahead as scheduled on Saturday 14th April from 7.15pm. Despite the walk being for a charitable cause, we have been informed that the previous name "Moonwalk" is a registered trademark and that any use of it could result in damages being sought by the company which owns the name. Further to the name of the event changing, the copyright owners have demanded that all advertising material bearing the old name be withdrawn.

So if you are an entrant and have any previous material relating to the event, please destroy it. You can keep your walk number, if you have one, but you must cut off the part which refers to a "Moonwalk". Ian Phillips, the appeal committee chairman, said: "We regret this inconvenience and the costs involved (all the original printing costs had been donated ensuring that every penny raised would go straight into the appeal fund) but hope that it will not detract from your enjoyment of and involvement in the event. I would like to stress that it was never our intention to cause any harm or to or take anything away from the owners of the copyright. We simply sought to arrange a fundraising fun walk to take place in the evening with every penny of the proceeds going to help in our aim to deliver the best possible breast care for the women of our community."

"May I also take this opportunity, on behalf of the committee, Leslie Donaldson and his team at the breast care unit and all those who will benefit to say thank you for all the support being given by local people, organisations and businesses. The Walk is an integral part of our plans to raise the funds required, so please support the event; we know that we can rely on your commitment."

For more information on how to get involved in the walk, call the helpline on (01472) 502039.

Funds top £182,500!

The Pink Rose Appeal has now received more than £95,000 of new money with pledges totalling £37,500 - so when you add this to the £50,000 we had to start with, the grand total has now reached an impressive £182,500!

With events in the pipeline, we are well on track. This is a stunning response after just four months since launch - so keep up the good work!

Gary Williams's concert hits the right note

The Gary Williams Show was a brilliant success, raising in excess of £5,000 for the appeal.

Our Grand Draw Raffle was also a success - we sold 7,500 tickets and therefore raised £7,500, because all of the 73 prizes were donated. Prizewinners are listed here. If you have won, you can collect your prize from Fleurtations, Unit 5, Granville Street, Grimsby, on (01472) 362914. Well done and thank you to all who supported these events!

Ken Barr makes a splash for the appeal

HEALING pensioner Ken Barr, 74, has made a huge achievement for himself and the appeal by learning to swim in just one month. He took lessons at Immingham Swimming Pool and completed a sponsored swim one length of the pool to raise funds for the Pink Rose cause. Furthermore, Ken completed the challenge in style - diving into the pool at the start, swimming the first half on his front and the second on his back. Thanks go to swimming instructor Sarah Frith for her help in Ken's success. You can read the article which appeared in the Grimsby Telegraph here.

Progress update

Thanks to great support from the local community, we have now passed the £75,000 mark, and with pledges the figure is now beyond £100,000! So keep up the sterling work - it really is appreciated!

Restaurant auction serves up a tasty donation

COLLEEN Hyde, the owner of the Victorian House restaurant in Grimsby, has raised £5,300 for the appeal by holding an auction and a raffle. Among the items up for grabs were LCD TVs, DVD players, Royal Dalton ornaments and designer perfume. The items were donated by local businesses and customers. Cash pledges see rooms named after donors

In addition to the Artie White foundation, we have received the following pledges which will qualify for rooms in the new unit to be named after them: The Friends of the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, £10,000; The Rotary Club of Grimsby St James (funds already received); The Rotary Cub Of Grimsby in Memory of the late Trevor Bootyman, £5,000; Grimsby & Cleethorpes Lions Club, £5,000; Shoreline, £5,000; Megs Hair Design (£2,600 already received), £5,000.

Thanks go to these organisations for their generous support.

Ken faces his fears to raise money

TRIPLE heart bypass pensioner Ken Barr is setting a fantastic example by facing his fear of water to raise money for the Pink Rose Appeal. Ken, 74, who lives in Healing, pledged to have swimming lessons once a day for a month at Immingham Swimming Pool. He is being helped with expert instruction from Sarah Firth (pictured with Ken). You can read the full story which appeared in the Grimsby Telegraph here.

If you would like to sponsor Ken, contact him on (01472) 507851.

Fence panel sales will help appeal funds

Lindsey Concrete Products, in Wilton Road, Grimsby, has pledged to donate £1.50 for each fence panel sold during February. And because of the recent strong winds, which saw many panels blown down and destroyed, we are hoping they enjoy a bumper trade this month... So if you need a new fence panel or a complete fence, you know where to go. The firm can be contacted on (01472) 210001.

Corus Steelworks forges some strong support

Prolific fundraisers at Corus Steelworks, in Scunthorpe, have pledged their support for our appeal.

You can read the story which appeared in the Scunthorpe Telegraph here.

Cartridge World pledges its support

Kind staff at Cartridge World, on Hainton Avenue, Grimsby, have pledged to help the appeal by donating £1 for every computer ink cartridge returned. Cartridge World is also donating ink to enable the appeal to print letters and posters ensuring that it has no overheads to take off money raised! Pictured here is Mike Spall, the store's manager. You can read the full story which appeared in the Grimsby Telegraph here.

Artie White Foundation pledges £5,000

This well known local fund raising group has pledged £5,000 and will have a room in the new unit named after it. Please support the events it is organising specifically for the Pink Rose Appeal. They are a Motown Mania night at the Beachcomber, Humberston, on Friday 16th March, and a Charity Golf Day at Cleethorpes Golf Club on Friday, 11th May. See the events page for more details, or contact Kingsway Printers on (01472) 211122.

Appeal gets off to a good start thanks to North Lincs Tyres

The very first business to respond to the appeal was North Lincs Tyres, and impressive was their swiftness and generosity. Within hours of a Grimsby Telegraph report hitting the streets on 15th November, the directors of North Lincs Tyres phoned and their cheque for £2,000 was handed over the same afternoon - so deep thanks go to all at the firm.
