A new unit for quicker and better care

The Pink Rose Appeal has the aim of raising £250,000 towards a new Breast Care Unit at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

This money will be added to around £900,000 of NHS funding, going towards a new unit which is needed to cater for a growing number of referrals. When the hospital's current unit was first opened in 1995, it saw 700 new patients a year. In 2005, the unit saw 2,840 new patients, with 3,880 follow-ups.

The current unit is cramped and 40 per cent of patients must wait up to eight to ten weeks to be seen. New facilities will allow all patients to be seen within two weeks without the need for employing more staff - an important factor given that early diagnosis of cancer greatly improves the chances of successful treatment. Furthermore, prompt referrals also quickly reassure the many women whose symptoms have a non-cancerous cause.

Work on the new unit will begin on 29th January 2007, and our target is to have raised the £250,000 by Autumn 2007 – so, not only will your support be greatly appreciated; it is vital!
