The failure of the D4 to fill the
overpowering dreadnought role for which it had been designed led the
Klingons to begin making preparations to construct a new cruiser by the late
2210s. This became the D5 class, which employed more Klingon originated
technology rather than the espionage based superficial imitations of
Federation and Romulan technology used on recent designs
