Mel Pritchard 1948 — 2004

On Wednesday, 28th January 2004, Alex Rose, Manager of Barclay James Harvest featuring Les Holroyd, called with the terrible news that Mel Pritchard, legendary drummer with BJH for nearly 40 years had died in the night.

We had just returned from a fantastic trip to Zurich, where we were appearing at the Mövenpick Art On Ice festival.

I first met Mel in 1992 at Revolution Studios, when I was involved in the Welcome To The Show album. From the moment we met, a strong friendship was formed — but Mel was like that — everyone was his friend.

I started touring with the band in 2002 and Mel's company was priceless on the long drives around Europe.

Mel was an extraordinary man: intelligent, sensitive, cultured, fun-loving, enormously talented and with a devastating wit. Woe-betide the unwary traveller; one false move and you would be run-through with Mel's withering invective — but always with good humour.

We are devastated by his loss and one thing is for certain: nothing will be quite the same without him.

Autumn 2002

Autumn 2002 heralded a rare live outing -- a tour of France/Germany/Switzerland with those giants of prog. rock: Barclay James Harves featuring Les Holroyd. I was lucky enough to be involved in the albums "Welcome To The Show" and "Revolution Days" and even luckier to be asked to join the chaps on tour.
