Welcome to a recent addition to the Kit History

Here we explain when the various badges that  represent

Derby County's History have developed and transformed over the years

The story of the 'Snorting Ram' logo adopted

by The Rams under Brian Clough in 1971 has been a popular feature of my website

since it's inception, if you have missed it then please follow the link on the side.

The beginning

It's a popular misconception that the first Rams badge was worn at the 1946 FA Cup final but this is in fact incorrect (more about this later).

The first badge was actually introduced in 1924. It was worn on the kit from 1924- 1926 inclusive but then for some reason it was scrapped.

Sadly I have not been able to find any photos of the badge either on or off the kit. But research describes it as a circular shield split in to 3

equal sections. These contained a Tudor Rose with Crown, a Buck in a park and a Rams Head. I have treid an impression of what this may

looked like, but if anyone has an original photo they would like to submit I would be grateful.

1934

Another club badge was designed in 1934, this time it was in the form of a shield, the Ram featured the largest while the Buck in the park and a Tudor Rose also featured. The badge was not however, incorporated on to the players shirts. As to why this happened we don't know it may have been cost? Again I don't have photo's but hope this is representative of what it may have looked like.

1946

This was of course the year that saw the glorious F.A. Cup victory at Wembley against Charlton. Here the myth started t prevail. It probably came about because of the photos of the team line up with the F.A. Cup proudly displayed at the players feet. the shirts display the now familiar Rams head in the shield, with DCFC intertwined. These photos of course were taken some time after the final and probably preceding the 1946-47 final. As photos from the final itself show that no badge was worn on the shirts.

1968

This was now the Clough era and I have no idea who's decision it was to stream line the badge, but the shield and the intertwined DCFC was removed leaving just the plain simple rams head logo. This Rams badge was obviously black on the white shirts and appeared in various other colours on various away shirts. Strangely enough though a lot of merchandise was still sold with the shield badge.

This logo was never copyrighted and in 2002 was adopted by The Rams Trust as their logo with the trust wording underneath.

1971

It was at the beginning of the 1971 season that the kit was changed to blue and white, also the old Rams head was transformed in to the new 'snorting Ram' that most fans recognise today. The full story of this design is here This new Ram was to usher in the new attacking Derby County and quickly found favour with the fans. Of course it also proved to be the badge of the new League Champions.

1975

As a one off at the beginning of the 1974-75 season the Rams played West Ham at Wembley for the Charity Shield )now known as the Community Shield) For that game the shirt had a specially embroidered date etc around the Ram

1979

In 1979 and for several years the Ram appeared on and off with wording underneath, sometimes it was on home shirts but not on away.

1982

In 1982 with the 'Patrick' kit the Ram logo moved to the centre of the shirt BUT it also suddenly dramatically turned to face right instead of left. This may have been seen as an attempt to change the luck but it lasted until 1993

1984-85

To celebrate the centenary of the club a special home and away shirt sported a Ram Logo surrounded by laurel leaves and under the Ram was the text 'Centenary 1984 - 1985. (special thanks to 'Wheaty' for providing the badge.)

1989-90

The ram remained facing right in 1989 but the kit significantly went back to black with the Derby County  F.C. text underneath the Ram

1993

The Ram is now turned to face left again now real explanation as to why this happened but this was on the Baseball style Bukta kit.

1995

The return to looking left lasted for a mere 2 years before it was revamped again - Now facing right the ram was enclosed by a diamond, had a yellow banner with Derby County text in it and 1884 underneath the diamond and the banner

1997

This year saw the move to Pride Park Stadium for the 1997-98 season. The Ram turns left yet again and keeps the banner below, however the diamond and the 1884 text also is dispensed with. On the shirt the logo was present as a black roundel almost like a sew on patch

On the outside of Pride Park Stadium the Ram was seen with just the banner as below

This was also the form of the badge that remained on the shirts for the next 10 years - Another roller coaster of managers and owners including having now convicted fraudsters in charge of the club. Before Peter Gadsby returned and then decided that the Premier League was not how it used to be.

2007

The Ram is now contained in the middle of a roundel and the text DERBY COUNTY FOOTBALL CLUB is on the two outer rings also just under the Ram on the inner ring is the Est 1884. The fans reaction to this were not fully favourable due to the gold trim which actually looked brown and therefore did not link in any way with any of our 'traditional' colours

2009

Peter Gadsby had made way for the new owners GSE (from America) and after a disasterous Premier League campaign followed by a near death relegation to Division 1, A clough was in charge again and the roundel Logo of two years previously was revamped and gained universal approval from most Rams fans. To be fair all it took was to change the colours to all black and white - sometimes simple is better and it now matched the Rams tradition.

So that concludes the badge history to date

Obviously we have no idea when there will be an update

but if there is we will bring it to you
