Mark remembers 'Star Soccer' on the old ATV
network
My story is less glamorous than others but nevertheless is personal to me.
I can't remember the day, but as i was born in 1965 and recall the 1970 World Cup Final vividly, i know that it was the first Championship Season when i used to stay up late and listen to my old red and cream transistor radio hidden in my bed......I seem to remember Peter Jones's commentaries vividly. I dont recall a specific game, but as a brummie born and bred (at least for 18 years) i had little real choice then, Birmingham with regular Hugh Johns on 'Star Soccer' on ATV, or third division Villa. Or Leeds or Perhaps Liverpool, but it was Clough and of course the attractive footy and the MUD of the BBG that did it.
I remember winning the Championship, it was the best and worse feeling, having to wait for others NOT to win (was it a Monday Night?) and from then on i was hooked. I've lived in Liverpool (in the 80's, both class teams then), Bradford and Stockport, but my home will always be the BBG and wherever Derby play will always be a close second best .
Favourite memory?- Trevor Christie's penalty v Rotherham in teeming rain on the Popside and the lap of honour to win the old 2nd Division title after beating Plymouth 4-2(that game had everything), are neck and neck in my affections for best feeling at a football ground.
