Section 2
Some of the kits in this section will I'm sure revive many pleasant memories for thsoe lucky enough to witness this era
1970 Home and the last appearance of the black Rams Head badge. This line up
boasted 5 internationals, would we like to see a team like this today- you bet !
1970 Away. The simple blue and white combination with the Ram badge also
white was effective as a second strip.
1971-72 Home - the new 'snorting' Ram logo was introduced (see the story -click
here) Also the 'traditional colours of Black and White were replaced by Blue
and White. In this photo though the white socks have been replaced by red
- obviously a colour clash. This new era also gave us the championship.
1972 Away - Yellow and Blue 'Zac' Kevin Hector shows the kit. I have to say
that any combination of yellow and blue is my favourite - check out the 1992
away kit
1972-73 Home- John O' Hare shows this fairly simple but smart kit, gone is
the neck and sleeve banding. This kit saw action in those fantastic European
competition nights.
1974 Away very similar to the '70 away shirt, but a collar is added and the
Ram is the snorting logo. Franny Lee shown here was a brilliant introduction to
the team by Dave Mackay
1974 Home - This shirt was superb, excellent quality material very smart
looking, blue collar with a blue v neck and blue trim sleeves. Its the first
shirt as far as I know where the manufacturers branding was obvious. It has the
famous Umbro diamond on the right breast.
1975 Charity Shield - Winning the League again (This time under Dave Mackay)
meant playing the first match of the season was the Charity Shield against West
Ham. Umbro provided a special shirt for the historic event. Seen here worn by
Colin Todd and in close up.
1976 Away - Colin Todd in full flight in this Umbro 'Argentinian' style
shirt. It was extremely popular with a lot of Rams fans and was also the start
of demand for replica away shirts. The one shown here sold on ebay recently and
is shown with original packaging.
1977 Home- this kit another smart one by Umbro took branding even further by
placing the trademark diamond as a trim down the sleeves. This was done by other
maufacturers of the time, the most famous being adidas triple stripe. This Rams
shirt was not available as a short sleeve replica, but I remember buying an
umbro short sleeve tennis shirt which was exactly the same and my Mum(bless her)
managed to sew a Ram badge on it and no-one knew the difference!
This
kit is purported to be a genuine match worn shirt circa 1977 from Gerry Daly
Okay
this is the missing kit that everyone has mailed me about C 1977 It was
never worn by the players on the field as shirt sponsorship was not allowed by
the F.A. This was only worn as part of teh whole club sponsorship deal with SAAB
and Woodford ? Garage at Mickleover, which also gave 1st team players a SAAB
car. These shirts were most commonly seen in either promo photos or worn by the
Golden Goal Girl sellers. Hope that clears up the confusion at last .
1978 Goalkeepers Jersey, made by Umbro and sporting the sleeve diamonds.
Modelled by Colin 'Bernie' Boulton. GK's jerseys were not the chameleon
creations we see today. The only variation was that of yellow or blue permitted
if the keeper was an international.
1978 Home still with Umbro, but 70's designer trend all gets a bit much with
a huge collar and huge Ram badge.
1979 Away and a departure from Umbro sees the introduction of silky style
shirts from french Le Coq Sportif.
1979 Home - Steve Powell (why he never got picked for England I'll never
know) shows us the home version. Very similar to teh '74 Umbro kit but the motif
is red as opposed to the blue of the Ram.
1980 Away Le coq sportif again, but this is the earliest record I can find of
shirt sponsorship for the Rams. So unless anyone knows differently then our
first shirt sponsor was British Midland Airways.
1982 Home - the sponsorship deal with new manufacturers Patrick was a three
year deal worth £10,000 per year plus bonuses and supply to the club of kit,
training gear and footwear. (a copy of this contract can be obtained on cd rom
with other goodies by contacting polcop@ntlworld.com
) It's also interesting to note that the snorting Ram is now facing left instead
of the traditional right since it's inception.
1982 Away - i finally tracked down a photo of this stunner, IMHO well worth
considering for a retro design kit, should fans ever have a say in teh design of
kits again. It's a nice silky feel kit but not too lightweight, a very nice kit.
1984 Home Centenary Kit - made by Admiral and sponsored by Bass, the coloured
stripes were to signify the original colours of Derby - amber, chocolate and
blue.
This is the mock up that I have made of the original kit and colours of Derby
County, this illustrates the reason for the colours in the centenary shirt. Okay
so how many want to see a true original shirt in a modern design for
today's team?
1984 Away sees the second of the centenary shirts, this
time in blue modelled by Kenny Burns. The shirt only photo is kindly provided by
shirt central.
If anyone has a either centenary shirt and would like to send it to a good home then please let me know - also any other shirts - The intention is to turn this virtual museum in to a reality display either loaned as part of a future DCFC MUSEUM OR RAMSTRUST please contact me at polcop@ntlworld.com
