DBA version 2.0 tournament

to celebrate the release of the new edition of DBA we are holding a 25mm tournament at the club between 7.30 and 11.00ish next Wednesday evening. James and I can provide several armies, but email me if you want to bring anything. We are aiming for 5 or 6 tables, each featuring a matched pair of armies. Competitors will then move from table to table with games lasting no more than 40 minutes, so you should get the chance to use 4 armies over the course of the evening. Points will be awarded, and there may be a prize at the end if I'm feeling generous!

Salute

As many of you are aware the Irregulars are again making the trip ‘down South’ to Salute on April 21st. The Demo game we are expecting to play is a battle between Early Imperial Romans and German tribesmen at the battle of the Idavisto in 16AD. Some of you may well be asked for support in lending figures or helping on the day. If you have an interest in going to the show then please let us know as soon as possible to see if suitable arrangements can be made for all (sorry, no guarantees…).

Le Comte de Pirouette puts Marlborough in a spin

25th Feb 2001

With the hall at his disposal this Sunday, Duncan set up a huge Marlburian battle using his DSMR (Dead Simple Marlburian Rules). Bruno Allanson commanded the French, whilst Duncan led the Allied army. The problems began for both armies before any shots were fired when it was discovered that neither general could draw an accurate map. The consequence of this was a crowded deployment leading to complex manoevering in the opening bounds.

Initial sucess seemed to go to Duncan, whose Austrian corps on his extreme right faced no opposition and commenced an outflanking sweep, whilst his artillery thundered away at the French lines. No reply was possible as the French guns remained limbered and on the advance.

The French right wing advances towards the enemy

Eventually battle was joined. The Allied Centre was engaged by the French left and the French right fell upon the Allied right. French cavalry bravely charged into the Allied infantry, and were slaughtered.

This led Bruno to revise his tactics and await the arrival of his slow-moving infantry and artillery, but time was not on his side as the Austrians were getting ever closer to his skeletal holding force on the left.

Battle raged for a further few hours. Both sides throwing more and more units into the combat. The Austrian flank attack was checked only by a courageous cavalry charge that swept away an infantry battalion. The rest of the battlefield became a bloody stalemate with neither army gaining a dominant position.

By the time we finished Bruno had gallantly fought his way to an honourable draw.
