28/04/09 Southwell 2- 2 WUFC Just a couple of weeks ago, this fixture had the potential to be a title decider; instead there was "only" pride and bragging rights to fight for as both sides had failed to keep their form when it mattered. Utd were forced to make a few changes yet still fielded a decent side. Southwell also looked to have made a few changes and started the game looking much the better side, racing to a two goal lead which was deserved. Utd were trying to make an opening yet could not get the better of Southwell's back four. Utd's half time team talk by Sean was inspirational and from the start of the second period the visitors looked much more assured, and created a few half chances. Ricki came on from the subs bench and was rewarded with a goal with about ten minutes to go. Southwell had lost it and Utd drew level through Marvin, almost sneaking the win with the last kick of the game. A draw it was though. Most obnoxious player award goes to Southwell's number 4, who resorted to spitting at his opponents after his dummy fell out. 25/04/09 OE's 3 - 2 WUFC Utd were facing a difficult game away at OE's after having been punished mid week at Monty Hind. That the good performances all season would become meaningless if we lost the game today was hanging over the players. Though taking the lead through a great strike from Golden, the legs did not appear to be up for the challenge today and OE's bossed the first half, equalising and then taking the lead. Early in the second period, Utd equalised from the penalty spot after Kingy was taken down by OE's keeper who was lucky to be given just a yellow card as the last man. At this point Utd were looking a little more confident but again went behind with the travelling supporters fearing the worse. Despite pushing three up front and coming close on a couple of occasions the advantage stayed with the home side who took all the points. It was a bitter pill to swallow but I think I will at least sleep tonight knowing the lads have done us proud all season. On paper we are still in with a remote very far away shout, but the clever money is on FC05 who have come strong when all around have folded. We have one more match away at Southwell on Tuesday and whoever takes the league title will have deserved it after a tough season! 23/04/09 Monty Hind 3 - 2 WUFC What a roller coaster this season is becoming! To say that we took our eye off the ball is an understatement when we visited Monty Hind for this doubly important fixture. The visitors were in need of points just as much as the hosts, yet it was the home side that took all the spoils to help secure their Premier League status. No excuses from Utd who were second best, fielding a strong side who underperformed. Big thanks to Monty for supplying medical kit when we needed it. Kingy with a screamer and Sam from the penalty spot scored for Utd. 18/04/09 WUFC 2 - 0 Old Elizabethans It would not be possible to have a more difficult end to the season than we are having with first Southwell and then OE's to contend with. Today's game had even more riding on it than last weeks, and had OE's won, they almost certainly would have taken this seasons title. Utd went into the game knowing that the opposition had not lost in the league for something like thirty six games over two seasons and have won the last eighteen on the trot which is a fantastic achievement. Utd were forced into a couple of changes from last week with Harry standing in for the injured Sean in goal, and Mellors in the back four with Ricki as a sub. It was clear to see that the visitors were a big powerful side and were taking no prisoners with some tough tackling from the whistle. Utd started to get a hold on the game despite the close attention, and created a few half chances which the OE's keeper managed to smother. Utd's defence was standing up well to the challenge, with the main danger coming from corners and free kicks. Eventually Boro' had the break they were looking for and just before the half time whistle, Sam, who had been kicked from pillar to post put the home side in front from a free kick. Early in the second half an unstoppable screamer from Reado put Utd in the driving seat and deservedly so. OE's were still in the game though and some heroics from Harry in goal and a few goal mouth clearances from the back four managed to keep the visitors at bay. Kingy was proving to have too much pace for OE's back line and a penalty was given when he was through on goal. Sam took the spot kick which was saved by the keeper, the ball looping up into the air. Sam went for the ball but the keeper beat him to it. From the resulting innocuous collision, all hell let loose. The OE's keeper is a big lad and must be twenty stone, while Sam is tiny in comparison, so the keepers actions were completely inexcusable and unwarranted. He was using Sam as a punch bag and had this been allowed to continue Sam could have ended up in hospital. Bodder's was first to react jumping on the keeper to try and stop him. What seemed like every other player and spectator from both sides then joined in to try and "help". The ref sent off the keeper and the unfortunate Bodders who was only tying to prevent the keeper making mincemeat of Sam. In the space of two weeks Utd have been on the receiving end of the oppositions punches, and on both occasions the peacemaker has been sent off. There is no place for this level of aggression in the game, and Utd are not a side who want any involvement in it, but what I will say is that I was proud of Bodders and the rest of the side who went to Sam's aid. We are a football team that can play some decent stuff, and what came out today is that we are a very close knit group of friends. Its good to know that when the chips are down you won't be on your own. The keeper did apologise to Sam after everything had calmed down, and if what he said was true then perhaps there was a reason for the red mist descending. Back to the football and the last fifteen minutes. Both sides were down to ten and of the two sides Utd were looking the more likely to score. OE's were taking a few risks and pushing for a goal which never came. Utd on the day were worthy winners. Next Saturday we do it all again!
11/04/09 WUFC 2 - 1 Southwell Amateurs A real double header and loads of atmosphere for this encounter as Southwell and Utd met in the league for the first time this season. Forget the past and any previous encounters, this game would be settled in the next ninety minutes and it certainly lived up to expectations. A lot was riding on this game as both teams strived to take top position in the league; defeat was not an option for either side and would be a real setback for their title aspirations. Utd fielded a strong side and had home advantage, whilst Southwell had a few forced changes. The game ebbed and flowed without a clear advantage or dominance until a spark ignited the fuse after about 30 minutes. A miss timed tackle from a Utd defender resulted in two players receiving red cards from the resulting melee as players jostled on the pitch. Southwell were reduced to ten, whilst Utd lost a sub who was trying to "arbitrate" the fracas and so had numerical advantage. The half time break came with the score at 0-0. Southwell seemed to be coping well during the second half (no disrespect Dave) with ten men, but eventually Utd put some moves together to create a chance for "Big Dunc Bodders" to slot in the opener for the home side. Utd managed to get a second through a brilliant solo effort from Kingy, but failed to finish off Southwell who had not given up hope, and were threatening Utd's goal, eventually getting one back after a good cross from Nicholls. A nervous last fifteen minutes came and went for Utd without Southwell adding to their tally, and with Utd taking the spoils. The league title race this season is wide open, and though Utd currently hold top spot, any one from four could end up with their name on the trophy at the end of the month. Utd certainly have the players to go all the way, but another strong challenge will be mounted next Saturday as Woodborough entertain Old Elizabethans in another crucial fixture. 04/04/09 WUFC 4 - 3 Brunts Report from Bove Less than 2 days after a great cup success for the 3rd time and a very boozy night to celebrate, Woodborough had a routine game against a struggling Brunts. Well, I say routine: Boro were missing a host of players through injury from the final and another because he really doesn’t understand life and doesn’t deserve to have any friends at all. It was a nice sunny day and there was a breeze blowing down the pitch and although Boro appeared to know this could be a potential banana skin, they didn’t apply themselves correctly. After 5 minutes they were 1-0 down, 10 minutes 2 nil, after a defensive lapse. Jonno was dragged off, Bodders came off injured and Boro had a bare 11 on the pitch. After having a legitimate Denver goal ruled out for offside, they were 3 down after Seany forgot how his legs worked! A half time rant, the knowledge of the wind in their favour and the fact the league title could be won made the Boro sort themselves out. Bove scored a lob, Sam a placed curler and a peno, and then McGill’s cross shot was deflected in and Boro led with 10 minutes to go! Another goal was disallowed by their cheating linesman, but Boro had made a remarkable comeback and took all 3 points. The always reliable Flea took MOM…not bad for a man who has played barely a couple of games this season! 28/03/09 Pinxton 1 - 3 WUFC I know it is still March, but April showers and a howling wind made life difficult for both sides today. The pitch also conspired to embarrass, and a few air kicks kept the travelling supporters amused. Pinxton are a tough side to play, and their results have shown they can make life difficult for any side; today was no different. Utd started brightly and took an early lead through Sam. Pinxton were playing with the advantage of a considerable wind in the first half and kept possession quite well. Utd always looked dangerous though and the quality up front eventually lead to their second through Linford following a sweet free kick from Nester. Pinxton were back in it from the penalty spot following a controversial decision which was their only shot on goal in the first half. It was not a fantastic game to watch in the conditions, but Linford's second goal brightened things up and made the score line more respectable. Harry and Golden came on as subs in the second half. Its a big game on Thursday as Woodborough take on Southwell in the senior cup final. The game is at Dunkirk's ground just off the roundabout by John Players factory towards Clifton. 21/03/09 Wollaton 1 - 4 WUFC Back at last and chance to update the site. An away day in Beeston started as an embarrassment for Utd as somehow the kit was left behind delaying the KO. I think there has been some psychology in evidence on the Nott's FA web site where on a couple of occasions recently, Wollaton have been referred to as the whipping boys of the division, perhaps in the hope of an upset? Well today Wollaton certainly had their backs up and particularly in the first half were playing some good football, and also defending very well. A solitary goal from Nester separated the sides at half time, after which a few changes were made for Utd, and the tide slowly turned in the visitors favour. Another two from Nester and one from Sam sealed the result after Wollaton had replied with a sweetly taken free kick. After seeing Wollaton play today, its difficult to see how they are propping up the rest of the teams in the division. 14/02/09 WUFC 5 0 - Nottinghamshire First I must start with a big thank you to Nottinghamshire for hosting this game. The pitch in Woodborough was deemed to be unfit on Tuesday, and Nottinghamshire kindly agreed to play on their pitch. This was going to be a tough game for both teams, and the early stages of the game were very physical. A clash of heads resulted in one Nottinghamshire player leaving the game, and Marvin for Utd battled on with a gash that will need stitching. There was plenty going on in the middle of the pitch, but chances in front of goal were few and far between. Utd managed to go in at half time one up thanks to Kingy, and came out after the break the more determined. Within five minutes of the restart they were four up with goals from Kingy, Linford and Bodders. Nester added the other with a determined piece of play to seal the win. This was a big win for Utd, and as Southwell did not play, takes us to the top of the league for the first time. Another clean sheet was the result of some dogged defending by the team which may be critical at the end of the season. I will be working away in the Falklands for the next 5 weeks so will not be able to update the web site, but plan to keep in touch each Saturday to catch up on the results. Good luck next week V Nalgo.
31/01/09 WUFC 9 - 0 TV FC A resounding win for Utd today as they try to keep the pressure on Southwell in top spot. Without their usual talisman up front, Utd did not fare too badly with Kingy getting three and Nester, having been asked to spearhead the side, slammed in five and received MOM. Equally satisfying, Sean and his defence kept another clean sheet on a less than perfect pitch. Sam cemented a good performance in midfield by grabbing the other Utd goal. 17/01/09 County Nalgo 0 - 3 WUFC It has been quite a break since our last league game and I have to say that you could tell! Nalgo were a very difficult side to play, and probably feel that they should have at least managed a goal during the first half when Utd looked a little shaky. As it turned out, Utd went in at half time one up thanks to Lindford with a great header. Changes were needed though, and Ricky and Sean between them shuffled the pack and the team seemed to settle a little better in the second half. Lindford made it 2-0 and Big Dunc managed to net the third with a bit of improvisation over his shoulder. Utd meet Nalgo again in Feb in the Cup, and will have to play better to win the tie. 20/12/08 Brunts 1 - 4 WUFC 13/12/08 WUFC 5 - 0 Pinxton The weather men got it right and the forecast was for loads of rain. The game went ahead though it was heavy underfoot. Utd took and early lead through Reado K after some good play and went further ahead again through Reado K with a good shot from the edge of the box. Boro' were in control, and limited Pinxton to short periods of possession. Despite the heavy pitch the home side managed to pass the ball around and Reado P ran the length of the pitch with the ball and managed to poke the ball under the keeper to make it three before half time. Early in the second half Linf made it four, and Marv made it five with a lovely strike that was too powerful for the keeper to keep out. Another clean sheet was the reward for some great defending by the back four and midfield. The number of goals conceded could be crucial later in the season so another good result. 06/12/08 WUFC 2 - 1 County Nalgo As predicted this game was a battle for both sides. Utd's run of good form would be tested against a side who have made life difficult for all the sides they have played. The early sparring showed few cracks in either defence, and what chances there were proved difficult. Reado K managed to get on the end of an uncharacteristic long ball from Utd, where his pace showed to round the keeper and put Boro' in front. Towards the end of the half, another long ball was spilt by the visiting keeper where Sam was on hand to finish off. In the second half, Utd managed to get a few half chances, but could not finish the game off against a well organised defence. Towards the later stages of the game, Nalgo finally broke Utd's defence and grabbed a goal back to make the last fifteen minutes a tense affair. Boro deserved the win but fair play to Nalgo who were always in with a chance. 29/11/08 WUFC 5 - 0 Steelers Apart from the three points, the most satisfying aspect of the game was another clean sheet!. With Sean between the posts, it would take something special to beat him, and a fantastic save in the first half kept the visitors out. Though they failed to score, Steelers, particularly in the first half, looked impressive and had good spells of possession. Golden scored the first early in the game after a good lay off from Woody. The early lead did not help the nerves though and Utd's defence looked a little shaky as Steelers pressed forward. Boon made at 2-0 before half time, and after the break Reado K (2) and Golden killed the game off. Another good win against a difficult side to beat. It was another bitter cold day, with fog and freezing temperatures to contend with, so thanks to the supporters who turned out to cheer us on. 22/11/08 FC05 0 - 3 WUFC Utd were forced into a few changes from the previous week as I am sure most teams have to. FC05 looked to be sporting a new kit and lined up before the game for a team photo and looked to be up for a fight. They also seemed to have a few new faces from the side we played last season. Conditions for the game could be described as Baltic with a freezing NE wind blowing from one end of the pitch to the other, though at least the sun was shining. Utd were battling the wind in the first half, and managed to knick the ball from the kick off. The ball was whipped in from the right and Linford managed to scramble in the opener in the first minute. What a start! Despite this early set back, FC05 took advantage of the wind and kept control of the ball and the game. Utd's defence was working really hard and Utd just could not keep hold of the ball. Despite their control of the game, FC05 did not create any clear chances and by half time Utd were beginning to get back in the game. Playing with the wind on their back's Utd had more possession and began to make a few chances with the front two working tirelessly, backed up by some hard graft in midfield. FC05 were still having good periods of possession, yet failed to penetrate the back four of Utd. Bove put Utd 2-0 up and Linford made it 3-0 with a header from a corner. That this was Utd's first clean sheet of the season is a testament to Utd's defensive qualities against a side who normally score for fun.
15/11/08 WUFC 7 - 1 Beeston OB's, MAA Cup 2nd round Utd started well in this game and took an early lead through Bodders who went on to get a hat trick and MOM. Forced into a few changes from the previous weekends game against the same opposition, Ricky chose well and the side look solid and assured. Utd continued to dominate the game and it was probably their best performance of the season. Though the visitors managed a consolation goal, Utd went on to hit seven. Lets hope we carry some of this form into next weeks game against FC05. 08/11/08 Beeston OB's 2 - 4 WUFC Woodborough eventually ran out deserved winners in a closely fought contest. Despite creating good early chances, and keeping the ball well, Utd fell behind after a defensive cock-up gifted Beeston the lead. The lead was short lived as Boro' equalised through Sam after some good play from the kick off.. Beeston's defence was being worked the hardest and doing a good job keeping Woodborough out until mid way through the second half when Bodders tapped in a cross from Killer's cultured right foot. Beeston though were still right in this game and struck back after another lapse at the back of Utd's defence. It looked like it was not to be Boro's day after a chance to take the lead from the penalty spot was missed. A powerful shot from Beeston's goal scorer slammed into Boro's crossbar and out to safety, and was another warning to Utd that the game was still to be won or lost (or drawn I suppose). Utd changed formation and went for the win and the pressure eventually paid off when another penalty was awarded and executed by Sam for his second in the game. In the dying stages, a good ball from Bove split Beeston's defence for Golden to round the keeper and finish well from a tight angle, securing the points for Utd. A good result for Utd against tough opposition. It will be no easier next week when we meet Beeston in the cup, though we will at least have home advantage. 25/10/08 Steelers 1 - 3 WUFC No report this week, but by all accounts it was a game of two half's, and we are over the moon with the result given the conditions which made it difficult to keep the ball on the pitch in the howling gale. 18/10/08 Bilsthorpe 1 - 4 WUFC MAA Cup Boro' looked like they wanted to keep hold of the trophy they have done so well to win the last two seasons, and played some good football on arguably the best pitch in the division. Despite their dominance in the first half, the visitors only had a two goal advantage and the game was certainly not out of reach for Bilsthorpe who were trying to make their physical presence felt! It would have been a better result had Boro' kept a clean sheet, but it was a much better game from the management perspective, and Sean and Ricky will be happy with the shape and balance of the side on today's performance. Its Steelers next week who are always a difficult side to play against, so Boro' need to take the momentum from today's game into their league campaign. 11/10/08 Nottinghamshire 4 - 3 WUFC Not a good game from from Boro's perspective, though the home side will be very happy. Looking good going forward, as last week, Utd look a little less assured at the back and Nottinghamshire capitalised storming to a three goal lead at half time. A much better second half from Boro' almost turned the game around, but ran out of time and Nottinghamshire grabbed all the points. Its the MAA cup next weekend, and if we are to have any chance of retaining it, we must stop leaking goals!
04/10/08 WUFC 8 - 5 Wollaton lll What a thriller for the neutral! An eventful and action packed game from start to finish. Wollaton's front pairing looked to be running the Utd defence ragged in the early stages of this game, forcing an OG, and gaining a couple of penalty decisions which were both converted. Utd did manage to reply a couple of times, but Wollaton continued to look dangerous. The team talk at half time obviously had the desired affect on Utd's players, and particularly at the back looked to be more in control of the game. Up front as ever, Kingy and Linford were devastating sharing 5 goals and Kingy with a hat-trick. Ricky, Chris and Sam added to the tally which could have been higher. MOM went to Kingy. Goal of the game had to be Ricky's OG, skillfully beating Wollaton's CF to the ball and at the same time drilling it past Harry into the bottom corner! Peach! 27/09/08 Retford Town 3 - 2 WUFC. Utd had a good start in this cup game, yet came unstuck early on after some direct play from the home side gave them the lead. Boro' passed the ball around well and made some good opportunities, yet were failing to find the killer touch. Retford had a comfortable three goal advantage at half time, which did not give a true reflection of the game. Boro' came out guns blazing in the second half and went for the result managing to get two goals back, yet finding it difficult to get the equaliser. 20/09/08 TVFC 2 - 5 WUFC. Boro had a good day at the office and came out comfortable winners against Premier Division new boys KVFC. Linf scored a hat trick to kick off his season in style. Next week Utd are on their travels and play Retford Town in the first round of the County Cup so I guess an early meet is in order. 13/09/08 WUFC 2 - Monty Hind A difficult game for Utd against a good side in Monty Hind. Both teams were playing their first league fixture of the campaign. It was Utd who took the lead through Golden, only to see the visitors level the scores before half time. Boro' again took the lead, only to see Monty Hind take a point with an equaliser. It was a tense last ten minutes for the visitors, reduced to 10 men after their keeper was booked twice for holding the ball for too long, and then kicking the ball out of the ground.
