So another year has gone and its time to reflect on the events which have made our season. We had a very impressive start with a couple of good wins, being brought down to earth by Beeston who have had a very good season themselves. We managed to pick ourselves up, and thumped Sandhurst of the NSL (Nott's Count Cup) in one of our best performances of the season. This was closely followed by an encounter with Southwell in the first round of the MAA cup which we won 3-1. This proved to be a tough game, and our only success against the eventual league champs. Another county Cup game against Calverton MW gave us home advantage and another good win. Before we new it, December was upon us and by the end of this month, our season had turned upside down. We went out of the County Cup against ex - MAA rivals Ashland Rovers who somehow rode their luck and won on penalties. This was closely followed by defeats in the league against Southwell, FC05 and OE's all by the same score line 2-1. At this early stage in the season, we had a mountain to climb if we were to retain the league title. Though we had managed to retain our cup form and reach the semi's, we began to blow hot and cold in the league. With injuries and work commitments keeping players out of the side, further defeats by OE's and Monty Hind resigned us to the fact there would be a new name on the league cup. We had an opportunity to reach the Cup Final, but only if we could get past Bilborough Town. We had home advantage and ran out winners 6-1, only for Town to exact their revenge  the following Saturday to confirm our shaky league form. We played OE's in the cup final in early April, after a hardly inspiring string of results in the league. Utd had the better first half and were two goals to the good after catching OE's a little cold.  OE's were stronger in the second period, and though they managed one goal, it was not enough to take the cup from us. This Thursday night match though had taken its toll on the players, and with only one day before another tough game against Southwell, we were struggling to field a team. A heavy defeat was the result which opened the way for Southwell to go on and take the title at their first attempt. FC05 must wonder what they have to do to win the league, after being out in front for such a long time. At much the same point last season, results started to turn against them, and they watched on as Southwell and OE's clawed back at them. Old Elizabethans have had a fantastic string of results in the league, and but for their early poor form could have won the title. We can be proud of our achievements this season, with a League Cup and 5th place in the league. Lets see what next season brings....

26/04/08  County Nalgo 1 - 6 WUFC

A good finish to the season consolidated our position in the league, narrowly beaten to 4th place by an improved Beeston outfit. Today Linford stole the show grabbing four more goals and taking his seasons tally to thirty which is another impressive haul considering the number of games out with work commitments. Ricky managed to double his count to make it two in the league this season, and Kingy got the other.

18/04/08  WUFC 5 - 1 Bilborough Town

Today's game was to prove a difficult one for the home side against a tough side in Bilborough. Though placed firmly towards the bottom of the table, Bilborough started the game as though it was the first game of the season and had something to prove, rather than it being a sort of nothing to play for game at the end of the season. Boro' managed to get the better of the visitors and put the game beyond doubt, but it was not until later in the second half that the game was done and dusted. Goals from Linford(2), Baz(2) and Golden were enough to kill off any challenge from Bilborough. MOM went to Flea.

16/04/08 Steelers 2 - 3 WUFC

Steelers thought they had this game in the bag after grabbing a two goal lead after 30 minutes and had the visitors on the back foot and rattled. Utd narrowed the margin on the stroke of half time when Marve finished off some good work from Kingy. In the second half a tactical change was made to the Utd team, and they began to get more of the ball. Steelers were rattled now, and wanted to hang on to their lead, bringing back the entire team into the box to defend a Utd corner. It worked for the corner but Linford managed to break the ring of steel levelling the scores. Steelers still had much of the play and were always a danger with the front pairing a continual threat to the Utd goal. Linford struck again for the visitors putting their noses in front, and despite some attempts by Utd to give Steelers another goal, managed to make it to the whistle taking all the points.

05/04/08   WUFC  0 - 5 Southwell Amateurs

It really  was a struggle today for  Utd. Taking no credit away from Southwell who thoroughly deserved the win, there were only five survivors from Thursday nights cup win in the starting line up, which has been the story of Utd's season. It was always going to be difficult yet Utd started brightly and had lots of possession early in the game. The visitors soon took control however, and managed to force mistakes in the heart of Utd's patched up defence which resulted in a 2-0 lead at half time. Southwell took their chances at every opportunity, and soon had the game sewn up. Southwell look to have the league title at their first attempt, so congratulations are in order on a job well done.  OE's have also had a fantastic run-in and may yet cause an upset, but a stuttering start to the season looks to have cost them dearly.

03/4/08  WUFC  2 - 1 OE's. MAA Senior Cup Final

A very close game and difficult to call before the game. OE's were favourites based on current form and league standing, though Utd were not unhappy about going into the game as underdogs. Utd started the better and managed to grab a two goal lead by half time which was deserved. Chances were thin on the ground for both sides so a lead at half time put the game in Utd's hands. From the off in the second period, OE's began to press and much of the second half was in Utd's half of the field. OE's went three up front and managed to grab a goal but Utd's defence stood strong and kept the OE's forwards at bay. So Utd managed to retain the trophy for a second year which is a feat in itself. The league title may have slipped from our grasp, but at least the Cup has added some silverware to display at the Nags!

29/3/08  WUFC 2 - 1 Bilsthorpe

A very close game with both sides chasing three points. It was Utd who just about deserved the win, though the visitors came close to taking at least a point. In the end, goals from Golden and Bodders were enough to see of the challenge and boost the team spirits before our cup final on Thursday. MOM went to Marvin the gypsy, back from his travels!

22/3/08  FC05 2 - 0   WUFC

Utd were second best today against FC05 who are still in with a chance of lifting the title. Another weekend where players were not available forced the 'Boro management into yet another changed team, which resulted in a below par performance. FC05 deserved to win and had far more chances on goal yet did not look to be on best form. The conditions were not good for a football game with a howling wind keeping the play on one side of the pitch, and resulting in a few forced errors. The home side took the lead through a bit of a fluke, though the goal was well taken. A pass out from the visiting keeper took a bobble and went under the foot of the Utd midfield, and was lobbed straight into the net from 40yds. It remained 1 - 0  until the 80th minute when FC05 managed to sew the game up.

15/3/08  Beeston OB's 1 - 3  WUFC

The topsy-turvey season for Utd continued with a well deserved result against a dogged OB's team. The home side came out of their blocks the stronger, and Utd were pegged back with some forceful play from OB's. However once this initial onslaught had been repelled, Utd began to make some inroads into the game and began to play some good football in the wide positions. Beeston continued to look dangerous from set pieces and are a big physical team who made their presence felt in the 18yrd box. This ultimately forced an error from Utd's defence who conceded a penalty which put the home side one up against the run of play. Utd fought back, and a goal from Bodders was fashioned from a speculative ball from Linford. Three months out with an injury had kept Bodders away from football and he is a most welcome sight in Utd colours again. The second half was much like the first. Utd played the football and made some good chances and it was from some great work down the left by McGill that Linford scored to take the lead for the visitors. 'Boro were lucky to stay in the lead when a cross was deflected onto the crossbar by a Utd defender, but on the day they deserved the win. Linford scored another late on in the game to make it more comfortable for Utd who had played some good football. MOM went to Killer.

8/3/08  Wollaton 4 - 1 WUFC

I do not have a match report as I was not at the game. If anyone would like to email me an account I can add it to the site. What I can mention is the Race Night at the Nags Head in Woodborough which went very well thanks to the organisation of Paul and Chris Bove. I am not sure of the amount raised but it was a real fun night and everyone enjoyed themselves.

01/03/08  WUFC 6 - 1 Brunts OB

Utd played some good football in the blustery conditions and had a healthy four goal advantage by half time playing into the wind. This was a chance for the manager to play all the subs, and try out one or two players in different positions. MOM went to Woody at centre back so the manager was justified in his decision! Goals from Golden, Linford, Holly, McGill and Matt with 2 secured the win.

24/02/08 Bilborough Town 4 - 1 WUFC

Bilborough managed to inflict Utd's worst defeat for a number of years as they took some sort of revenge for being dumped out of the Cup by Utd last weekend. Even the satisfaction of victory for the home side was soon lost as the realisation that a number of cars had been broken into during the game dawned on everyone. One car was stolen and a number had damage inflicted by the moronic scumbags that blight this part of Nottingham.  Any other teams had similar problems at this venue?

16/02/08 WUFC 6 - 1 Bilborough Town (Semi Final league Cup)

Though 'Boro had to be slight favourites for the game based solely on league position, it was the visitors who made the running in the first 15 minutes. They had taken an early lead, were playing some good football and it was mystery as to why they were in the bottom four of the table. It took thirty minutes before Utd had anything to show, and it was a header from Ricky that drew the scores level, before Golden fired one in just before half time to take the lead. Utd began the second half strongly, and began to make some progress through midfield and up front, eventually grinding down the visitors defence. Golden grabbed another as did Parve, Bove and Matt to make it a comfortable win in the end.

09/02/08 WUFC 5 - 2 Pinxton

A much better performance today from Utd and finally some points!  A welcome return to Bodders back from injury was another boost and the sun shone all afternoon!. Things are looking up. It did not take the home side long to force the running and soon took the lead through an OG. Linford soon added another with a a header from a sweet cross delivered by Bove. The game was not really hotting up into a contest though, and Utd went further ahead through Linford to take a good lead into the break. There was only one side in it and the result looked even more certain when Utd scored straight from the KO, with Matt claiming the goal.  Pinxton did manage to score a couple after Woodborough stepped off the gas, but Parv put the game beyond doubt with a great strike to make it 5-2. It was a much needed result, and a confidence booster before next Saturdays Semi final.

2/02/08 WUFC 2 - 4 Old Elizabethans

Utd continue on their slippery ride down the league table after another defeat, this time at the hands of an in form OE's. The game was much closer than the score line suggests, and the thin margin between the two sides came down to the excellent OE's keeper and in form striker.  The visitors took the lead through a Utd defensive mix up, and were making the most of the wind on their backs, pressing the game towards Utd's defence. The home side weathered this early pressure and countered with some good play, eventually getting past the OE's keeper, who had managed to frustrate Utd's forward line with some excellent saves. OE's went in at half time 2-1 up, and were pegged back almost straight from the kick off as Utd were given a penalty which was initially saved. Quick reactions from Saco who took the kick, saw him beat the defence to the rebound and finish the job off. Following the goal, Utd were playing well and pressurising the visitors defence, yet never managed to unlock it.  OE's countered and took the lead, sealing the game with a late strike from their impressive striker. Utd went away from the game disappointed that despite playing well, they could not stop the run of defeats that has seen them plummet down the table.

26/01/08 Monty Hind 1 - 0 WUFC

Yet another shocker for the Utd faithful to endure. It was a poor game to watch and only a handful of bright passages of play from either side lifted the gloom. It started well for the visitors with a few half chances and the possibility of a goal just minutes away yet this was not to be. Chances came and went for Utd, and Month Hind were doing a good job marshalling the Utd forwards. In a game with only one goal to show for ninety minutes of play, it was not a game peppered with clear chances, and defences dominated.

12/01/08 Bilsthorpe 4 - 4 WUFC

It would not be fair to the manager to take the micky.... but under the circumstances it has to be said that the funniest thing I have ever seen on a football pitch will be a talking point for many years to come. Beeby was reeling already from a depleted squad with first choice players unavailable, yet putting his name on the subs list should be just a precaution. Within five minutes, it was looking likely that Beeby may get a run out as Trev twisted his knee, making Beeby next in line and with Harry struggling with a groin strain there was every possibility it would happen.  An awkward ball for Harry to deal with was one stretch too many forcing him from the pitch and Beeby on. Again to be fair, Beeby had not kicked a ball in anger for a year or so, yet I feel there was no excuse for what followed as Beeby chased after the ball. His top half was going fine, it was only his legs that could not keep up as he tripped over an imaginary work cast and fell head first on his nose. His momentum carried him forwards, and as he had not tied his shorts properly, they ended up around his ankles exposing his rump for all to see. At the sight of this everyone fell about laughing except the forward with the ball and Sean in goal who managed to deal with the threat. It was pure slapstick comedy; thanks Bubs for giving us all something to cheer about on a bitterly cold afternoon, watching some dire football. MOM went to Golden for his two strikes, Ricky (thief?) and Ben also on the score sheet.

05/01/08 WUFC 1 - 2 FC05

Another defeat for Utd almost certainly means a different name on the League cup at the end of the season. FC05 have had a great season and continue to look title favourites. Woodborough will feel they had done enough to get at least a point if not all three from this game, after a much improved performance, which had the visitors on their back foot for much of the game. FC05 started well and took the lead after a goalmouth scramble which then spurred the home side into action. Utd played some quick passing football, but could not open up the tight defence of FC05 until the second half when Ben stroked the ball into the corner of the net after a great passage of play. Utd were looking comfortable and FC05 were rattled, but the game turned on its head when another soft goal was conceded by Woodborough. Though they continued to press for an equaliser it was not to be and FC05 took the points. Though it was still a defeat, Utd will take a lot of positives from this game.

29/12/07 Old Elizabethans 2 -1 WUFC

Woodborough had been forced into a number of changes for this vital game against a strong OE's side who had been putting in some good results. With no forwards to choose from Utd were a little light weight up front, but still managed to take the lead when Wess finished off a good move down the right. OE's had a couple of shots in the first half but nothing to trouble the keeper, though this would change in the second half after OE's made a few tactical changes. On came their super-sub who took up a centre forward position, and was immediately involved in a penalty decision which was despatched to level the scores. The home side were now dominating the game and a sweet strike from their forward put them 2-1 up. Utd had a ten minute spell towards the end of the game, but OE's were now running the clock down and took a deserved win.

22/12/07 Southwell Amateurs 2 -1 WUFC

Utd came unstuck today against an improved Southwell side. It all started so well for Utd who went ahead after five minutes through Bodders who finished a peach of a move. Woodborough will rue the chances that came and went in the first twenty minutes when the visitors could have put the game well out of reach of Southwell. As it turned out, the home side were the better team, and had much of the play, though never had a clear chance until the second half when their pressure finally told on the Utd back four. It has to be said that the official on the day had a big part to play, and the number of bookings ( I lost count but must be around 8 ) did not reflect the nature of the game. Utd suffered a blow when Bodders has to go off with a knee injury, and later lost their other forward when Linford did his hammy. Southwell were still applying the pressure, and eventually took the lead with about fifteen minutes to go. Though Utd fought back it was too little too late and Southwell deserved the win to keep pressure on FC05 who remain favourites for the title.

15/12/07 Brunts Old Boy's 0 - 2 WUFC

It was a hard a frozen pitch that did not really thaw out during the game, and caused loads of problems for both sides. Utd fielded a changed side from the previous week, and a few players found themselves in different positions. All credit to the squad who came to do a job and were not really threatened until late in the second half, when a few tactical changes by the home side resulted in some pressure on the Utd back four. In the first half Dodge found himself in on goal, and from a tight angle, smashed one in at the near post. Golden scored the second from a sweet free kick courtesy of Bove, and Sean managed to keep a clean sheet with a couple of reaction saves. Brunt's failed to create clear opportunities in front of goal and in the end Boro deserved the win. Must rank as one of the coldest days ever for the travelling fan!

8/12/07 WUFC 5 - 2 County Nalgo

The conditions were not great for football, and Utd started to play down the wings to keep the ball moving. This paid off when Matt crossed the perfect ball for Linford to head in Woodborough' opener. The lead was short lived as the visitors took advantage of a mistake at the back to level. Conditions were always going to force errors and the game was littered with them. Utd eventually took control of the game and though a mistake cost them another goal, Bodders (2) Holly and another from Linford finished the game off.

10/11/07 WUFC 7 - 1 Monty Hind Old Boy's

There was a strong wind blowing from one end of the pitch to the other which had an influence on the result. Both side started well and the home side had the wind behind them in the first half. This was not always an advantage though as often the ball went behind for a goal kick when we ran out of pitch. Sean was not complaining though when he cleared the ball from his area, and watched as the visiting keeper fumbled the ball into the goal! Sean also managed to save a penalty in the first half, so was a candidate for MOM which he duly won. The score line I think was 2-0 at half time. Utd were forced into a few changes in the second half, Jonno and Bodders both getting a game. Utd's forward line is formidable when Linford, Bodders and Golden are together, and with help from the likes of Bove, Holly and Woody, set about the second half demolition of Monty Hind. Playing into the wind now, Utd's forwards managed to get hold of the ball more, and created plenty of chances five of which were converted.

03/11/07 WUFC 2 - 1 Calverton MW res. Nott's Intermediate Cup 2nd round

What a great game of football this match turned out to be. OK as WUFC won, I would say that, but there was not a point when I though the match had gone flat. There was always an ambition from both sides to attack and go and win the game. For the first 10 minutes or so, the visitors from The Central Midland League, looked to be the stronger and more confident side, but gradually Utd came out of their shell and began to probe up front and create a few chances. It was Linford who broke the deadlock though, putting Utd in front. Before the break Linford struck again, this time from a deep free kick taken by Sean, who had earlier made a great block to prevent Calverton from scoring. Now it was Utd who looked the more settled and went to the dressing room at half time with their noses in front. Utd started well in the second half, and began to create the clearer of any chances. There were about 20 minutes to go at this stage and Calverton were getting a little nervous until Corky struck a fine shot which Sean could not quite get to. The score was now 2 - 1 and Calverton decided to go for broke and play three up front. Nester nearly grabbed a goal which rattled the Utd crossbar, but the best defence on the day held out and the game was Utd's.

27/10/07 Pinxton 1 - 1 WUFC

A disappointing result for the visitors who wanted to get back to winning ways in the league, and try to keep the pressure on FC05 who seem to be running away with the league at the moment. Ben scored, Flee was MOM and Jonno won the hat without getting on the pitch!

Next week we are home to Calverton in the Nott's FA cup which will be a hotly contested affair. Bragging rights are at stake, so get you heads on the game which will be a 2:0pm KO in Woodborough

12/10/07 Southwell Amateurs 1 - 3 WUFC

Utd were playing in the league cup and defending the trophy they won last season. It looked on paper to be a difficult game against a side who have had a great start in the league. Southwell are enjoying their first season in the premier division and they turned out to be a very strong team. Utd started sharply and had the home side on their back foot in the first ten minutes, though Southwell soon came out of their shell and started to hit a few long balls over the top for their speedy forwards to run onto. From a good passage of play, Utd managed to force an error from the Southwell defence, and the visitors were one up from an OG. Southwell hit back, and it was 1-1 when Dodge was forced to leave the game with a ham string injury. Nick shuffled his team for the last time and Andy came on just before half time. After the break Utd picked up the pace and piled on the pressure, eventually going in front with a fine header from Bodders. Linf added another from the penalty spot and the game was over with fifteen to go. MOM Jonno.

05/10/07 WUFC 6 - 1 Lady Bay

Not a great game for those watching who decided to ignore the fact that England were beating the Aussies at Rugby! Boro' ran out comfortable winners in the end, but made hard work of Lady Bay who did not really get a hold on the game. Lady Bay gifted Utd an early lead when their keeper fumbled a shot from Golden and threw the ball into the net! LB hit back almost straight away when their forward tapped in after Harry had saved from a decent shot. Gradually Boro' went further ahead with goals from Ben, Dodge, Bodders and Golden(3). G hit a cracking third after picking up the ball from a precise kick from Harry, beat a number of LB players then hit a hard shot past the improving LB keeper. (The keeper had managed to save a penalty from Bodders and a number of efforts on goal that looked to be certs, after his initial cock-up.)

Nick has reluctantly thrown in the towel as manager due to work commitments. His last game in charge will be next week, before he moves down to London to put Shredall on the map in that part of the world. Though he will still be back up on occasions, he is not in a position to put in the work and time required to do the managers job. Nick will be sorely missed both as manager and mate, and our best wishes go out to him on this new venture. I am sure Nick will be as successful in business as he has been in football management.

Anyone have the number for José Mourinho?

29/09/07 WUFC 7 - 1 Sandhurst

A slick performance today left the visitors reeling. Utd started well and had a couple of good chances early on before making their mark on the game by taking a deserved 2 - 0 lead. Nick had been forced to make a few changes due to injuries and illness but was rewarded by a solid and fluid display of football. The quality of Utd finishing was evident and Linf and Golden added to their seasons tally. Linf with a hat trick and Golden two. Matt added another with a header, and perhaps the pick of the crop was from Bove with a sweet strike. It was not all one way though, and Utd defence must take a lot of credit for keeping Sandhurst out for almost ninety minutes. Bodders was holding onto everything and made an outstanding save from a blistering shot. Lets see this form next week against Lady Bay.

15/09/07 WUFC 3 - 4 Beeston Old Boys

Beeston did a smash and grab on us today and deserved all the credit for competing for 90 minutes. Utd started well enough and went 2-0 up early on but could not find the form to kill the game off. Beeston battled their way back into the game and from 3-1 down went on to win the game with a blistering strike and a couple of tap in's. Congratulations to Beeston for stopping our winning run of 15 straight wins in league and cup stretching back to 17th of Feb!

08/09/07 WUFC 6 - 2 Wollaton lll

Scorers Golden 2, Ben, Macca, Linf and Parv

01/09/07 WUFC 7 - 1 Steelers

Utd could not have hoped for a better start to the season with a fine performance against a strong Steelers side. Linford christened the new goal posts with an early strike, closely followed by another from Holly, whom we welcome back to the side after a year in Oz. Though Utd looked comfortable at 2-0, Steelers clawed their way back into the game after converting a penalty, kindly donated by Dodge another welcome addition to the team this season. After the break, the game started turning in favour of Utd, and chances started to find their way into the net. Goals from Chris, Golden(2), Dodge and Ben killed the game off in convincing style. MOM went to Holly.
