28/04/07 WUFC 4 - 2 Steelers

Utd knew exactly what was required. It was a win and nothing less. We knew that Ashland Rovers had lost to a resurgent Underwood side that we had beaten two nights previously in a tight game. That put WUFC two points clear at the top, but with an inferior goal difference to Ashland. A win against Steelers would seal the league title for Utd who had been on a breathtaking run of victories (13 in cup and league) and looked to add the league title to the Senior Cup. The final league match was a roller-coaster ride for the management and spectators! Steelers are a strong side and on their day ( like today) are capable of beating any team in the league. Utd went ahead through Linford, but were quickly pegged back by Steelers Ross Grainger who was a thorn in Utd's defence. Utd again went ahead through Linford only to see the lead disappear when Grainger equalised. The chips were down, and  a tough decision was made by the Utd manager to change the team. Half time came and it was 2-2. During the second half Utd had much more of the ball, yet the chances went begging. The last 10 minutes were on the clock, and it was not looking good. The roll of the dice had deserted Utd and a flurry of goals looked a remote possibility. Then from a corner, when all seemed lost, Ad headed home and a glorious victory looked on the cards. The relief was evident and Utd looked to extend their lead in the last five minutes when Baz sealed the win. The result was 4-2 to Utd and both side knew what a hard game it had been!

After finishing the league in top spot Utd have an agonising wait to see what the league officials decide to do regarding the Underwood v Ashland game. Woodborough believe that Underwood may be penalised but not that Ashland should be given an advantage by an award of points. Utd have won the league on their own merit and do not deserve to have the title taken away on a desperate appeal by a team on a technicality.  The leagues top spot has gone down to the last game of the season (and beyond). Utd have played whatever side has been presented to them in the league and cup, and proved that they are worthy Double Winners!   Up the Boro'

24/04/07 WUFC 4 - 2 Underwood Villa

Underwood had been forced into a few changes for this midweek fixture as had Utd. With the pitch hard and unforgiving, this would be another hard fought match and at the end, many players were wearing a little less skin than they started with. Utd started briskly and took a 2-1 lead into the break. Ben and I think Golden had scored in the first half, the ref deciding to blow for half time just as Sean hit the back of the net for what should have been boro's 3rd. Utd were making a few more chances, but Underwood were still creating a few problems for the home defence. Eventually boro' managed to get some breathing space and took a 4-1 lead after Baz and Sean netted. Villa struck back to make it 4-2 and a substitution seemed to give them another breath, but Utd held onto their lead and took all the points.

I think that makes Utd top of the league!  Woodborough have been chasing the top spot all season, and have deservedly got there after ten straight wins in the league. The title looks to be going down to the wire with only a few games remaining. Whatever happens, it will have been Woodborough's most successful season and one to be proud of.  We are playing Steelers on Saturday, and Utd will have to be at their best to beat a difficult side on this last game of the season.

The MAA presentation night will be on Friday May 25th and the tickets are £20 each which includes a 3 course meal. As cup holders I thing we should  make an effort to get the whole squad down to Meadow Lane and enjoy the night. Let me know if you want a ticket!

WUFC 3 - 2 County Nalgo

Talk about hangovers! After the exhilaration of Thursday night with a fantastic performance to take the cup, today there were a few tired legs and heads. Nalgo were in no mood to keel over and showed Utd how it should be done, storming into a 2-0 lead early in the first half, and deservedly so. The second half was a little better for Utd who eventually showed a little class and began to move the ball around up front. Matt C started the comeback and took a great goal from a 50-50 with the keeper. Golden levelled the scores and Linford put Utd's nose in front. Nalgo were unlucky to go down to 10 men, yet still posed a threat on the break.  Woodborough I think were relieved to hear the final whistle!

WUFC 1 - 0 Underwood.  MAA Senior Cup Final

A fantastic night for Utd who took the trophy for the first time. It was a hard fought battle but in the end  Utd were just a little better in all departments than Underwood. A controversial penalty was missed by  Utd's birthday boy early in the first half and this was followed by a great save by the Underwood keeper from Bodders. The breaks were not happening up front though Utd back four were doing a tremendous job keeping Underwood at bay. 0-0 at half time, the game was wide open. Bove was tirelessly running up and down and eventually he created an opportunity for himself but was foiled again by the keeper who was having a great game. The game turned when Linford headed home from a cross to put Utd 1 up with about 10 minutes to play. Underwood switched to 4-3-3 but were not able to break Utd defence though they did go very close in a goal mouth scramble.

14/04/07 WUFC 5 - 1 Monty Hind

11/04/07 Steelers 3 - 4 WUFC

The score line flattered Steelers who were chasing the game after going behind early on. Linf managed a hat trick and Bove added the other. Utd were cruising at 4-1 with 10 to go, but Steelers to their credit kept battling and managed to scrape a soft goal then scored a beauty from a direct free kick to make Utd a little nervous for the last few minutes.

31/03/07 Bassingfield 0 - 6 WUFC

A sunny yet breezy day in West Bridgford saw the Boro produce a result which increased their goal difference substantially. With the skipper out injured Woodborough made a couple of changes and battled against the wind in the first half. The first goal came after about 15 minutes after Mat C was brought down outside the area. Woody crossed in and their left midfielder put the ball through his own net. Woodborough then began to control the game easily and coped with the Bassingfield “youths” and long ball football easily. Woody grabbed his first of the game with an exquisite lob on the half hour mark and a third was added soon after with the move of the game. Woodborough broke from their own left back position quickly and after 2 or 3 passes the ball was fizzed across the six yard box with Bodders applying the clinical finish. More of the same soon followed in the second half, although it took Boro a while to get going! A Flea cross from the right led to another own goal, Woody calmly slotted in a fifth, and then Linf got in on the act with two goals. One header from a Baz header back across goal and another absolute beauty with his left foot, mid air, on the volley, when it was easier to make a fool out of himself!

7-0, job done…post season break for Easter awaits!

24/03/07 Wollaton 2 - 4 WUFC

A good win for Utd today who made the best of the conditions. A bobbly pitch and strong wind made it difficult to play good football but Utd ground out an important win. Golden scored with Baz and Nester also on the score sheet. MOM went to Golden.

17/03/07 WUFC 3 - 1 Lady Bay

A shift of venue for this home game did not upset the run of form and results for Utd who had much more of the ball than Lady Bay. The wind was a problem for both defences and Utd managed to make the most of this advantage in the first half. 3-0 up at half time through Golden, Baz and an og (sure Matt will claim it) Utd could not turn their control of the game into any more goals. In fact Lady Bay struck back in the last 5 to make the result 3-1.

10/03/07 Beeston OB's 1- 2 WUFC

Beeston were a surprise in that they played much better than their league position. A well marshalled defence and quick up front, they were disappointed not to get a point from this game which was won at the death by the visitors who just about deserved the win. Utd were forced into changes and had the bare 11 at kick-off. It took a while before they carved out an opening but it was all square at half time 0-0. Beeston went in front after some good work by their forwards, and Utd then set about getting level. Utd had long periods of possession but could not get through the packed Beeston defence. Baz eventually broke through with a shot from outside the box, and then grabbed all the points from a scramble after a good passage of play by Utd's forwards.

3/03/07 WUFC 4 - 1 Brunts Old Boys

Another difficult game on a bog of a pitch after some heavy rain on Friday night. Again the game only went ahead after some early morning work with forks to get rid of the surface water. Utd do not play at their best in these conditions, but were still too good for Brunts who were second best for much of the game. Utd were two goals up at half time, and looked comfortable but Brunts managed to steal a goal from a scramble that was always going to happen given the conditions. It was not until late in the game the Utd pressed home their dominance with another two goals that gave the result some respectability.

24/02/07 WUFC 8 - 4 Wollaton

This game very nearly did not go ahead due to the state of the pitch after some heavy rain. Even after some work with forks prior to the match by "the ground staff", the surface was very heavy. But due to a really congested fixture list and the fact that we had already postponed three games in Jan and Feb, the match had to go ahead. Utd started well and took the lead through an  OG after some good work from Bove on the right wing. Though the home side looked to be having more sight of goal, they could not open a clear advantage over Wollaton who stuck to their task and played some decent football in the difficult conditions. And so it went on. Utd went another goal up, and Wollaton pegged them back, and at one period in the second half it was four apiece. The class up front for Utd then began to pay dividends and some slick football in the challenging conditions finally gave the home side something to show for their hard work.

27/01/07 Ashland Rovers 1 - 0 WUFC

How Ashland managed to win this game is a mystery. The home side took an early lead from a soft penalty after 5 minutes and never had a shot on goal for the rest of the match. It was a completely one sided game and Woodborough dominated the game for the next 85 minutes but were unable to score. I think Ashland must also consider themselves lucky to have won.  Well that's the sour grapes out of the way but a true analysis. Bove won MOM and there were also good performances from Baz and Nester.

06/1/07 FC05 0 - 5 WUFC

Utd today never looked like losing this game and tore into the FC05 defence from the first whistle. It was an impressive performance from the visitors, though I think FC05 were not the same side that beat us at home early in the season. Bove, Bob, Ben, Bodders and Golden took a goal each, with Ben's being the cream of the crop, a shot from 30 yards into the top corner. Bob took MoM deservedly, and Ad marshalled the defence helping Sean keep another clean sheet. Not forgetting Jonno who took the hat for a "shot" on goal that buzzed the corner flag. Great game to watch unless you were supporting the home side who took a beating.

30/12/06 WUFC 3 - 2 OE's

On paper this would be a close game and as expected the game was won and lost in the last few minutes. The heavy pitch made it hard work and both sides struggled to find a rhythm to their game. Utd broke the stalemate in the first half when Bove converted from a quickly taken free kick. The lead was short lived and OE's struck back immediately when they also took advantage of a sleepy defence to equalise. Utd went in front again when Ad finished a nice move with a header at the back post. The second half continued to be a close fought affair with neither side having a strangle hold on the game. The visitors made a tactical change, pushing 3 up front and struck back with a solid header from a corner to make it 2-2 with 20 minutes or so to go. The match was hotting up and Utd were just about nudging this stage in the game, finally grabbing a goal through Bodders, ably assisted by Lindford with a knock down with only a few minutes on the clock. It will be of no consolation to the visitors to know they played their part in a good game of football as they wanted much more from this game.

29th December Woodborough Utd fund raiser at Calverton Village Hall

A fantastic night was had by all ( except the neighbours) at this musical extravaganza. Ad Crabtree deserves a big mention here as he was instrumental in the organisation of the whole event from booking the band to buying the booze and coming up with the idea. Jackhammer  went down a storm, opening with some classics from Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, AC-DC, Deep Purple and other artists I still have on vinyl and grew up listening to. They complemented the classics with some contemporary greats from The Zoutons and The Scissor Sisters. The evening was a fund raiser and it was also very successful on that score with over 50 people attending, so thanks to all who shelled out and turned up. The entry fee was a fair exchange for a great night out and If you were not there you missed out big time!

23/12/06 WUFC 9 - 2 Bassingfield

A bitterly cold day for the spectators who were at least entertained by the teams today. The visitors took a surprise lead after only a minute or two, but were soon pegged back by Utd who were missing their main strikers today. Bove struck first, then it was the Bodder's show, knocking in five, the first of which was a sweet strike from 25 yards out. He of course took MOM. Ricki keeps the hat for the lowest header ever. Other scorers were Ben (lobbed the keeper from way out), Nester and McGill who sadly has played his last for us this season and will be spending the next 6 months in Australia. Chris will be missed on and off the pitch and our best wishes go to him on this trip of a lifetime.

16/12/06 Monty Hind 1 - 1 WUFC

A really hard game for Utd who were frustrated by the home defence. Woodborough had made quite a few half chances in the first half and had most of the ball, though went in at half time trailing to Monty. The second half continued in much the same way, and eventually the visitors managed a deserved goal through Lindford.

25/11/06 Lady Bay 1 - 2 WUFC

Not a pretty game and Utd left it really late to turn the game around after LB had taken the lead early on. Lindford with a penalty and the skipper were the scorers for Utd. MOM went to Sean after pulling off a couple of great saves to keep us in the game.

18/11/06  FC05 2 - 3 WUFC MAA league Cup QF

A fantastic performance today from the squad, and a deserved win against one of the leagues top teams. Goals from Linf,  Nester and Matt sealed the victory in a game made difficult by the blustery conditions.

11/11/06  WUFC 3 - 2 Beeston OB's

A good win against a team who certainly looked better than their league position would lead you to believe. Beeston were a tough nut to crack and defended well, also creating a bit of trouble at the other end. Goals from Lindford (2) and Nester sealed the win for Utd.

04/11/06  WUFC 1 - 3 Basford Utd

A match that was played with great spirit by both sides turned into a bit of a farce through all of the yellow and red cards being bandied about. The first 70 minutes was a great game and both sides were looking confident and making good chances, with Basford just nudging the game 2-1. The first penalty awarded against Woodborough was for some innocuous challenge which was converted on the second attempt. The home side struck back through Lindford just before half time, but Basford took the lead again just before the whistle. The second half was stop start mostly down to the ref, and Basford took the advantage and put some daylight between the teams. Unfortunately Woodborough went down to ten men and were chasing the game but still creating good chances. Basford missed a disputed penalty, but go through to the next round. Best of luck to them too.

28/10/06  Count Nalgo 1 - 5 WUFC

A great win on Saturday lads. Goals from Nester (2), Golden (2) and Lindford. Its the glory of the cup next week at home against Basford Utd from the Nottinghamshire Senior League currently in second place. Its 11 v 11 on the day and we have a great chance at home of creating an upset against quality opposition.

14/10/06  WUFC 4 - 2 Monty Hind in the MAA Cup

Another good result for Utd which takes us through to the next round of the cup. Will this be our year? If we keep on playing with this confidence and with the ability in the team, we can go all the way. There were a number of good individual performances which helped ensure the win. Ad led by example as usual, and scored our first goal. Linf netted two more with a couple of amazing finishes and Matt ran straight down the middle and also finished in style. Nester bossed the game in the middle and put in a lot of quality work up and down the pitch.

30/09/06  WUFC 3 - 2 Wollaton

The first round of this cup competition turned out to be quite a game. Utd were sporting their new club kit of Green and white hoops (aka Celtic) from our sponsor Ken at the Nags Head in Woodborough. The home side started sharply and took an early lead through Bove, only to be pegged back from a deflected shot that gave Sean no chance in the Utd goal. Sean had a great game and also saved a penalty in the first half. However Woodborough stuck to their game and their perseverance paid off with a fine strike from Linford. The game looked to be heading for extra time after Wollaton drew level, but in the nick of time Chris M tucked away the winner with minutes left on the clock. A deserved win for Utd.

23/09/06 Brunts 2 - 3 WUFC

16/09/06  Underwood 4 - 2 WUFC  It has been while since back to back losses for Utd, but we did not deserve anything else out of this game. Not one of our best, but a positive note to come out of defeat was our attitude late in the game in getting a couple of goals back. Lets put this one behind us and look forward to next Saturdays match against Old Boy's.

09/09/06  WUFC 1 - 3 FC05   We were not sure about the opposition today having been promoted into the Premier division, it was our first game against them. Utd started well, and Linf managed to catch their defence cold early on and finish well from a tight angle. After that it was a fairly tight hard game though Utd failed to create clear opportunities . FC05 managed to finish the game off with about 15 minutes to go when a great header from a good cross put them 3-1 up.

02/09/06 OE's 1 - 2 WUFC   A great start to the new season and a win for Utd! It was heading for a draw at 1-1 when Chris M scored in the last moments of the game to take all the points. Chris also managed our first goal, with Harry putting one past Sean for our first og of the season.
