Woodborough United Football Club

Results during season 2005/2006 MAA  Premier Division

WUFC 1 - 2 Steelers

Utd ended a good season with a run of bad results which slightly soured our last game under Matt Williamson's reign as manager. Golden hit a beauty in the first half from a slick pass from Utd's veteran left-back, and despite several half-chances, that was the only goal in the first half. Steelers had not read the script and were not making life easy for Utd,  really  pressing the home side in the second half. This payed off for them and they struck a scrappy goal to make the scores level. Steelers took the lead from a header and took the win in a hard fought game. MOM for Utd was Nick.

8th April WUFC 2 -2 Beeston OB's

A short report this week as I did not travel to the game. Utd left it late to equalise from a penalty, the other goal was on OG. Congratulations to Underwood who completed the League and Cup double with a 3-1 win over Racing Athletic. No game next Saturday, but we have a bike ride instead, starting in Thurgaton around 2pm. Last game of the season is at home on the 22nd against Steelers.

1st April WUFC 1 - 5 OE's

What can I say after one of Utd's worst results in 3 years. The game did not start well with only 10 men and an early injury to Sean in goal who had to leave the pitch. Big thanks go out to Ben and Meeksy for turning up at short notice and Andy and Nick who played with injuries. This would have been a tough game against a good side anyway, and Utd were well and truly turned over by OE's who have had a good season. Golden scored late on for Utd

25th March WUFC 7 - 3 Lady bay

A good performance from Utd who were playing some slick football and had quite a few chances to make double figures. The game started 45 min's late as Bay forgot to bring their kit. Once underway the Utd forward line were probing the visitors goal and it was not long before they took the lead. This proved to be short lived as Bay scored from a corner soon afterwards. Some notable events during the game include an OG from "Hat-Trick Rick", and James from a penalty save (really unlucky) awarded against Matt C. The bookings during the game got out of hand, and even Bove "the destroyer" saw yellow. MOM went to Linford for his double strike. The jacket was not actually awarded, but it goes without saying ( I suppose I have just said it) Ricki will be wearing it next week.

18th March WUFC 5 - 1 Bassingfield

Back to winning ways for Utd though Bassingfield were making life difficult especially in the first half where the scores were level at half time. Ricki had put Utd in from from a corner, beating his marker in what would be an eventful game for the Utd centre half. After the interval, Utd continued to have most of the play and it was inevitable that the home side went in front. Ricki managed to bag a hat-trick and MOM ( I kid you not), and Ad and Lindford scored one each. Andy managed to take the jacket for his shot that ended up in the tennis court.

11th March Racing Athletic 2 - 1 WUFC

This weeks report will be short as I missed half of the game. Racing were one up at half time after taking an early lead. They extended this lead after a good finish from their centre forward, firing a low shot into the corner. Lots of possession and pressure from Utd failed to produce a goal, and it looked to be one of "those" games. Matt C eventually fired a cracking shot into the net to give the visitors a slight hope, but it was too late in the game and Racing took the honours.

4th March WUFC 2 - 2 Beaufort

A tough game against good opposition and the spoils were shared. WUFC seemed to be having the better chances and it was against the run of play when Ricki managed to steer one past his own keeper to give Beaufort the lead. This was short lived as straight from the kick off, Golden intercepted a ball destined for the keeper and put Utd level. There were a few good chances created for the home side from both flanks in the first half but no one could quite get on the end of them. It was left to Graham again to stab in a close range shot to put WUFC in front, only to see Beaufort equalise from a corner. The second half failed to see another goal, but WUFC were having most of the play and creating most chances.  Beaufort were happy to get a point, and it was a little disappointing for the home side to draw their first match this season. MOM went to Golden, and Ricki easily took the jacket for his OG.

18th Feb Wollaton lll 2 - 4 WUFC

Utd started the game well and broke the deadlock after some honest work from Golden. The bright low sun was difficult for both teams throughout the game, and the ref seemed to have the right idea by wearing dark sunglasses and blotting out everything from view. This included a penalty appeal by Wollaton after BB had an air shot at the ball and kicked the forward into orbit. Utd scored two more in the first half (Graham and Bove), and the home side just the one. Lindford had to work afternoons, so Utd were forced into a change at half time, Nicky boy doing the duties at right back, with Matt C pushing up front. Ollie was brought down in the box and Ricki seized his chance to get onto the score sheet from the spot. His shot was well placed and went into the corner of the net. Wollaton  had a decent amount of the ball throughout the match but were not allowed too many chances by the Utd defence. Utd continued to make chances after chance in the second half but had to settle for four. Matt C took the jacket for his miss in the first half which ended up in the Trent! MOM went to Ricki.

11th Feb  Lady Bay 0 - 3 WUFC.

A win for Utd. Not a great game and Bay were a better side than their league position would leave you to believe. Bove, Lindford and Ad scored for Utd. Lindford also managed to get the jacket for missing a chance.

4th Feb Steelers 2 - 3 WUFC.

A gutsy performance today after gifting Steelers a couple of goals, one in the first half, and one very early in the second. WUFC had made a promising start and a couple of good shots were well saved by the Steelers keeper. However Steelers are a good strong outfit and difficult to break down, and it was not until midway through the second half that Utd managed to get a goal back. And what a goal from Andy! He megged the fullback then curled in a shot with the outside of his boot to give Utd a glimmer of hope. The gaffer had made a tactical change, pushing three up front and the change had begun to pay dividends. It was BB who connected with a beauty which flew into the roof of the net which put Utd back on terms.  Another screamer from Matt C put us in the driving seat for the last 10, but even during this period, Steelers missed a sitter which would have tied the game up.  BB "won" the jacket this week for not taking off his shirt after his goal. Watch out for the photo.

21/01/06 Bassingfield 1 - 7 WUFC

WUFC Golden and Lindford certainly worked the double act up front scoring all the goals between them. Golden hit four and Lindford three. It was not a great football match, and the ref did not help the game flow, pulling up players for a lecture at every opportunity. Utd made the most of their chances and some clinical finishing had the opposition playing catch-up. A bumpy pitch and bright low sunlight led to a few scuffed and sliced shots. Bove took the honours for the inaugural "Jacket" , kicking a corner straight out for a goal kick. Watch out for the photo. MOM went to Sean.

14/01/06 WUFC 4 - 5 Underwood

This was on paper going to be a tight game, with perhaps the odd goal taking the spoils. As it turned out, Underwood did just that with a never say die attitude which turned the game around in the last 20 ins. A player down after 40 min's, Underwood were looking second best, though the score line at half time was 2-2. Utd went 4-2 up and the game looked won, but a decent strike from 25 yards went in off the post and the game was back on. Utd folded and Underwood to their credit battled on and took the game. There was to be no way back in for Utd, a really hard result to accept. Next week it is Bassingfield away. No excuses, lets be more polished, lets have more discipline and enjoy the game. Its fun to win!

07/01/06 Derbyshire Ams 1 - 5 WUFC

Nice to get off to a win on the first Saturday of the New Year. It didn't take Crabby long to make his mark on the game playing a slightly unorthodox position for him along side Golden up front. His strike partner also had  much to shout about; Graham putting two goals on the score sheet after a bit of a barren spell. Ad netted another diving to head in a cross, and low and behold, Bubsy smashed in his second in two matches! Derbyshire looked a better team in the second half and grabbed a goal back but it was too little too late.

17/12/05WUFC 3 - 4 Old Elizabethans

Utd came unstuck against OE's on a surface which was almost solid at the end of the game due to the bitter North wind which swept across the pitch. Spectators were stamping their feet to keep warm and also in frustration in a match which turned upside down after the interval. It was not Utd's best game, and OE's took their chances well to go 4-2 up after being 2-1 down at half time. The scorers were I think Lindford, Saco and BB. Yes that was BB on the score sheet for the first time since Betsie Hadcock behind the school bike shed in 1995.

WUFC 6 - 2 Derbyshire Amateurs II

Utd dominated long periods of the first half but did not produce the goals to show for the chances that were crafted. Bove put the home side in front and Lindford added the second with a fierce header towards the end of the first half. The visitors had replied and it was all to play for in the second half. The half time team talk seemed to do the business, and chances were taken in the second period. Lindford grabbed a hat-trick and Matt C a brace as Utd ended comfortable winners.

26/11/05  WUFC 3 - 2 Beeston OB

Woodborough dominated the game for long periods and had lots of chances to kill the game, most of which were thwarted by the OB's keeper. Matt C and Bove with 2 were the scorers for Utd.  Beeston had few clear chances, but their second goal was a little special and Utd's keeper had little chance from 30yds. MOM went to Bove.

22/10/05 Sherwood Forest 1 - 8 WUFC

Bit of a relief to get back to winning ways with a fine performance against Forest. Lindford with 4 and Matt C with 3 will make the headlines, but it was a good solid job done by the whole team which was most pleasing. Saco was also on the score sheet, and had a great game, perhaps going home a little disappointed for not scoring more. Ricki gave away 1 peno which was missed, and there was another culprit who "handled" in the box to give Forest their only goal. Names please...

15/10/05 Racing Athletic 4 - 1 WUFC MAA Cup

This was not one of the best games that Utd have played, but to fair, Racing are a good outfit who on the day were the better side. Lindford kept his scoring run going, Willo made an entrance and is still talking of his chance to volley one in at the back post. Next week its back to league duty, against Sherwood forest, and time to put things in order. Underwood will be over the horizon if we don't get some points on the board!

08/10/05 Underwood 5 - 3 WUFC

The home side had the advantage of an unbeaten run at the KO, yet boro' were able to score first and looked confident they could take the game. A few early injury problems then put UTD on the back foot and they began to get a bit rattled, allowing Villa into the game for long periods. The game was close up until the last 10 when the home side seized on some lapses in the tired UTD defence and won the game. The scoring told a story. 0-1,1-1,2-1,2-2,2-3,3-3,4-3,5-3. Lindford with two and Saco were the scorers for UTD.

01/10/05 Old Elizabethans 1 - 2 WUFC

A hard fought game eventually went the way of the visitors. There were a few chances for Utd in the first half yet the game remained goalless. After the break, Utd came out fighting and were looking more in control. Some slick play had carved out a few chances and it was Saco who broke the deadlock. Linford completed the scoring, unless you count Adam's OG with the last  header of the game... Its a big match next Saturday against the unbeaten Underwood, which also has an early KO of 12:30.

24/09/05 WUFC 15- 0 Bassingfield

I was not at the game and do not have many details. I think Saco and Lindford bagged 5 each! Golden and Ben two each. What a result! This game turned out to be a friendly and not a league match.

17/09/05 WUFC 7 - 1 Beaufort Utd

Another top draw performance from the boys this week! Lindford grabbed another stylish hat-trick ( two in two weeks), Matt C with two ( after Willo's tactical change) and Briggsy and Saco one goal apiece. The home side had a consolation goal with a sweetly struck free kick, after Jonno had scythed down Trev and the Beaufort player, much to the amusement of those watching. Woodborough played some sweet football throughout the game and it was this that eventually overcame the resistance of the Beaufort defence. The game was close at half time with Woodborough 1-0 up. Beafort had hit the post and Woodborough had a couple of chances before Lindford put the visitors in front. The second half was dominated by Woodborough who eventually ran out comfortable winners.

10/09/05 WUFC 6 - 2 Wollaton lll.

A stunning performance this week and some great finishing put the game out of reach for the visitors. Lindford took the honours with a hat-trick, Golden with a brace and Briggsy one. The first half was full of chances for Utd who were playing some really good football, but had managed to score only once before the half time whistle. The second period goal tally matched the domination by Woodborough, and the end result was no surprise. However the visitors did reply and at 3-2 the score was anything but decided. Some classy finishing from a string of chances put the nails in the coffin for Wollaton.

03/09/05 WUFC 0 - 1 Ashland Rovers .

A disappointing start to the season and a frustrating match to lose after playing some good football and creating a few chances. The game was tight and the home side looked a solid, capable and well organised team without being "flash", (but definitely beatable). The next match is where we begin to put things right so lets get focused for Wollaton!
