30/04/05 WUFC 1 - 1 West Bridgford
West Bridgford were out to spoil United's fun, having watched as the MAA Division 1 trophy was presented before the game. They certainly made the game difficult, and few chances were carved out for the home side. In fact Bridgford stole the lead after an unfortunate clearance from Sean was charged down and into the goal. Some nervous play from Utd eventually led to a corner from which Ad nodded in the flick on from H. The post and crossbar came to Bridgford's aid, and the final score was one apiece.

The Mighty Boro v Old Elizabethans II

There was a fantastic turn out by the ‘boro faithful, who could not have been disappointed by this match despite the result. OE’s brought a very capable team to the table, determined to smash some ‘boro crockery. The mighty ‘boro started the game in confident mood, played some good football, looked comfortable on the ball and went one down after 15 mins to a goal from a deflected defensive header.

More pressure, more good football, more dominance from the ‘boro brought the equaliser – a neat finish tucked away by H.

Halftime.

More pressure, more good football and more dominance from the ‘boro in the second half gave everyone the feeling that we would capitalise and take the lead. However on the hour mark, one of OE’s plucky youngsters had other ideas and scored the goal of a lifetime to hand them the lead (might as well hang yer boots up now son). 10 mins of untidiness on our behalf benefited the visitors, who extended their lead following some sloppy defending from a corner 3-1. The last 15 mins were all ‘boro with chances galore and golden bagged a late lifeline. It wasn’t to be in the end and OE’s held firm to take the win. On balance, the ‘boro edged it, but its goals that count and credit to OE’s for taking the points. The mighty boro is now a wounded animal lets see what Saturday brings.

Brunts Old Boys 0 - 5 The Mighty Boro

Welcome back the ‘boro. After three consecutive league matches without a win, the mighty boro carved out an impressive victory against yet more determined opposition. The first half hour was a closely fought affair with chances going either way. Brunts were in no mood to mess about and it was clear that if we were going to win, it would require a solid team performance. The breakthrough came in spectacular style. Ricky latched on to a bobbling ball and directed it sweetly across the grass, past a despairing keeper. Sorry……. Ricky latched onto a ball rolling sweetly across the grass and bobbled it past a despairing keeper. Either way 1 up, we were on our way!

Half-time. The sun was out and the ‘boro began second half by upping their game and produced some effective football. Once again our fitness showed as Golden bagged a hat-trick and Mat forced another in off a defender. The ‘boro defence was once again a credit their parents, midfield was hassled but remained in tact and the attack once again give defenders a headache at pace. A special mention must go to Seamus for an outstanding save from a Brunts free kick 5 minutes from time. A deserved 5-0 victory was the outcome and hunger rediscovered for the final week of the season.

20/04/05 WUFC 1 - 3 Broadmeadow's.  Match report from Ad "The Scribe" Crabby

Broadmeadows v The Mighty Boro

First things first, can I just thank everyone for getting to that game last night. I know a 6:30pm kick off on a Wednesday night is a stretch for most people and it just highlights the commitment shown by everyone this season that we had a full compliment of players and even a couple of fans.

The match itself started fairly slowly for the ‘boro and we showed some rustiness after our 2 week lay-off. B’meadows drew first blood with a nicely placed finish from 20 yards (even Marv would have been proud of that one). Its fair to say that Woody’s performance was enough to lift us out of our daze and we started to play some smart football midway through the half. Both Louse and Malc were getting involved and really boosting our numbers and options going forward. The inevitable happened on 35mins as our pressure told and Marv forced the ball in from close range following a cracking delivery from Woody 1-1.Halftime.The boro started the second half in buoyant mood however the tireless running and battling of Mat, Golden and Josh just couldn’t forge us the goal we deserved. The turning point came on the hour mark with an inexplicable decision by the referee not to dismiss one of B’meadows star substitutes for a blatant head butt on Malc. This decision seemed to act as a catalyst for reckless challenges to start flying in from all angles, with the quality of football on display suffering.Despite resolute defending from the undisputed best defence in the league Trev, Ricky, Malc, Louse and Seamus B’meadows ran out deserved 3-1 winners. At the end of the day, the ‘boro can console themselves with an 8-3 aggregate win and the knowledge that we are the 2004-05 CHAMPIONS of the MAA Div 1 – Bring on the Bling, Oh Yey!!!!

26/03/05 WUFC 1 - 1 County Nalgo. Report from Sean:- "Not really too much to say about this game. I think the weather had an effect on both sides and especially my kicking.  I will repay Nalgo for the 18 balls I placed in people's gardens.  In fairness Nalgo started better than us and had an early chance that was drilled straight into my hands from the edge of the box.  This seemed to wake us up and we had a couple of close efforts mainly coming from Golden Dancing feet Crowe.  How he managed to hit an early shot from controlling it on his chest is beyond me and it literally flew past the far post!! Apart from that not many chances were created from either side, apart from a couple of goalmouth scrambles at their end!!  Second half I feel we dominated but couldn't seem to find the net!!  Benjamin Wood pinged a ball with that sweet right foot of his and Bovey rose like a salmon to loop it over the keeper!!! (Yes with his head) And everyone thought this would stop him moaning, oh no no no!! Literally one minute after our goal a long ball from there centre back caused havoc in our goalmouth and their striker managed to get around me leaving me with no choice but do the honest thing and pull him down!! Penalty!!! And he converted it with ease!!  We still dominated after that with dancing feet hitting the bar, Bovey forcing the keeper to make a good save and me forcing the keeper to tip the ball over the bar from my own half!! Final score 1-1 and a game we should of won!! If any Chelsea fans would like to force the referee into early retirement please do because he was absolutely useless.  The game got very dirty in the end and he couldn't handle it!! Maybe that's why we only played around 35-40 minutes second half!! MOM Went to Ricky for being solid as a rock!! Also well played to young Benji! Glad to see you back to your best kid!! Anyway we are now champions and what a great achievement!! Also having the only 3 players from our league, representing the reps side just tops off a great season!! Well-done lads!! Bring on next season!!!"

26/03/05 WUFC 0 - 0 Monty Hind. No match report this week, just a few observations from the side. The game shot past and the 90 min's seemed to be over so quickly. There were few clear chances for either side and it was testament to both defences that the keepers went from the game with clean sheets. Sean did make a splendid save towards the end of the game stretching those long limbs of his down to the right and pushing the ball around the post. The match was very competitive, though played in a good spirit,  and both teams enjoyed a drink in The Bells after the game. There are 5 games left for WUFC to earn 2 points required to win the title, and so it seems like the chase is still on, contrary to a little wind up from Willo on Saturday. Racing Athletic are in with a shout, so we have to get back to winning ways.

19/03/05 WUFC 5 - 1 Radcliffe Olympic. Woodborough were looking to improve on the last couple of performances and from the KO were an improved side. A few early chances were created for Utd and a goal looked to be coming. Bove breached the home defence and a classy strike from Woods'y made the scoreline 2-0 at half time.  Olympic had not troubled Sean much in goal, but had battled for possession in midfield throughout the first half and were making a good game of it. Apologies as I missed much of the second half, but a goal for Golden from sheer persiverance chasing a nothing ball resulted in his 20th this season. A penalty awarded to the home side for ? was put away, and goals from Matt C and Marvin completed the scoring. Just time enough to Mention Ben's first half chance (read open goal) where he decided to chip the ball out for a goal kick.

12/03/2005 WUFC 1 - 0 Old Bemrosians First a big thank you to Gunthorpe FC for the use of their pitch as our was not fit to play on after last Saturday's match. Today's game was perhaps most memorable for the change of venue and the fact that the 100% record almost went. Old Bem's certainly seemed determined to bring Utd down, and nearly took the lead in the first few minutes, with Redo pulling off a couple of great saves to keep the scores level. A long ball over the top was Golden's cue to get Woodborough's nose in front, and he finished cooly under pressure for the only goal of the game. Old Bems's continued to look for an equaliser, but the best defence in the division held their ground for their 19th straight win. MOM this week to Willo for a superb management job this season.

05/03/2005 WUFC 6 - 2 Keyworth lll  The conditions immediately before the kick-off put the match in jeopardy with a strong wind from the North blowing in the snow showers. The temperature was only about 3 or 4 degrees and the wind chill was cutting.  The pitch soon cut up and became a bit of a state but it was the same for both teams. Keyworth seemed to take more of an advantage and stormed into a 2-0 lead early in the game. WUFC had come close with a strike against the upright and crossbar, and one dubiously cleared from the line with a "shoulder". It took some effort from the home side to draw level before half-time with goals from Golden and Marvin. WUFC manager Matt Williamson had already been forced into an early change when Nicky Boy limped from the pitch with a strain after 5 minutes. Cramp? shouted his team mates as he left the pitch. The second half saw a number of changes to the formation of the home side, and Willo was keen to try out another system. The tactics worked and the goals flowed for Golden who ended with 4. Matt C completed the scoring after a slick move from Utd.  A special mention to his bro Adam who decided to pass the ball to the large Willow tree some yards wide of the goal.. MOM went to Sean in goal for some great keeping... Anyone know how to switch on his light sabre?

19/02/2005 WUFC 3 - 0 Radcliffe Olympic  All credit to Olympic who had much of the possession but few chances. Those chances they did have were dealt with admirably by Sean who kept a clean sheet with some great saves. Matt C took the MOM with three assists for Marvin, Bove (excellent finish) and Josh. Next week is Old Elizabethans in Woodborough, and on paper it will be a much tougher match. Lets get into gear and turn in a good team performance!

12/02/05 WUFC 6 - 1 Nottinghamshire The weather did its best to disrupt the game with a howling gale and stinging rain blowing straight down the pitch. It failed to dampen the spirit of Utd who took advantage of the conditions in the first half and went in 3-0 up after dominating the half. The conditions equalled out the game in the second spell, and the game did go flat for 20 minutes. It was difficult to play any sort of football, but Woodborough did make the best of the conditions and another three goals were crafted and grafted. Marvellous Marvin has a mention for a stunning hat-trick (2nd this season!) as does Adam for grabbing two and Josh for adding another to his tally. Another good win!

05/02/05 WUFC 2 -1 Caribbean Cavaliers This game was always going to be difficult to win for Utd as Cavaliers are a strong side on their day and have players who can win games from nothing. The match turned out much as predicted - a hard fought battle to the end. There were few chances in the first half and Sean had come off his line well to cut out Carrib's best opportunity. Woodborough took the lead in the second half when "Golden" Graham seized on a half chance in the box. Within seconds of the restart, Utd sub Malc had bundled over an attacker in the box and could only watch as the Carrib's drew level from the spot kick. Utd kept at their task, and Golden Graham struck yet again after some slick footwork in the six yard box. This goal proved crucial, and despite an onslaught from Carrib's in the last ten minutes, Utd ran out victors. Another mention to Malc for the tackle of the season. The Carrib's forward was last seen passing Mars.

29/01/05 WUFC 7 - 0 Broadmeadows  This fixture was reversed as the pitch in South Normanton was waterlogged. The pitch in Woodborough cut up as expected, but we could not afford to have a "spare" weekend. It will be rolled before the next home game! Back to the match and it was a close fought affair in the first 30 minutes. Broadmeadows were playing some decent football, but they could not prevent a sublime first goal for Utd skilfully netted by Bove. At half time Matt had increased the lead, but the game had not yet opened up. The second half resulted in a blitz on the Broadmeadows goal, with little resistance met. A classy hat-trick from "Marvin", and goals from Graham, and Josh sealed Broadmeadows fate. The after match honours went to Sean for keeping a clean sheet. Cracking team performance!

22/01/05 WUFC 3 - 1 Nott's II  Not a good start for the home side who were one down within five minutes. There were a few forced changes to the side and it took a while for the players to find their way. Matt C started the recovery with an excellent "strike" from near the corner flag to put the sides level. The second half recovery continued and Josh and Golden slotted in one each. Good to see Graham back from injury, and MOM went to Ricky!

15/01/2005 Monty Hind OB's 1-3 WUFC . Bove walked away with the MOM after netting a hat-trick in this thrilling game. The home side were playing some good football and it was a very close game until the last 20 min's when Utd turned the screw. WUFC went ahead early on after a terrific turn of speed from Matt C took him into the penalty area only to be hacked down from behind. Chris stepped up, took the spot kick and watched as the keeper palmed the ball back to him. Having been offered a second bite at the cherry, Chris chipped the ball into the back of the net. There followed a spell of pressure from Monty Hind, and a couple of good chances were missed. They grabbed a deserved equaliser before half time from a corner kick. The second half panned out pretty well for Utd who began to open up the home defence. Chris's second was a well taken lob from 25yds, and his third a powerful shot through a melee around the six yard box. This was a great team performance from Utd who have now won a straight twelve in the league. You could not ask for any more!

Beeston AFC 6 - 3 WUFC. 04/12/04 Well there is always the league to concentrate on! Utd were beaten after a mad 5 min's in extra time in this Nott's FA Cup match. With 2 min's to go in normal time Utd were 2-1 up. That's the cup for you. Best of luck to Beeston in the next round.

West Bridgford 0 - 4 WUFC .27/11/04  Mention to Bovy who scored a hat-trick as Woodborough continue to win in the league.

06/11/04 WUFC 5 - 4 Vine.  Nott's County Cup. A great cup tie this. A nine goal thriller. WUFC met a team who bit back. This was no pushover and the home side had to use all of their resolve to take a close game. The visitors had travelled from Gainsborough and must have been a little disappointed after the effort they put in. (too bad) . The home side were forced to make a number of changes which included the goalkeeper, centre half and centre forward. However the changes showed the depth of the squad this season and all the team contributed towards the win. At half time goals from Ben, Harry and Martin looked to have the game secured with only one reply from the visitors. From the start of the second half, the visitors were looking to improve their tally, and the game was to get very close towards full time. A penalty slotted away by Bove and a late own goal finally put the game out of reach for the travellers. MOM went to Martin Small who received a lovely gift from Ricky of a pair of goldfish. I am taking bets that they will not see out the year!

23/10/2004 WUFC 3 - 1 West Bridgeford MAA Intermediate Cup

A comfortable win today with Woodborough missing plenty of chances throughout the game. West Bridgford came without any subs and were clearly tiring into the 2nd half. Adam Crabtree opened scoring after blasting it in off the keeper relatively early on. Sean gave away a penalty later in the half after clattering Nick Williams' player on the edge of the area, this took it to 1-1. In the second half Ben headed a goal in from a corner and I later scored after Graham squared the ball to me on the edge of the area, leaving me in plenty of space to take a touch and bury it. Another game, another win.

09/10/04 WUFC 9 - 0 PASE

This score line  paints a picture of a a totally one-sided match, but to be fair to the visitors, they had a few periods in the game when they held onto the ball well, and looked capable of scoring. However the visitors also managed to spoil the game completely with their anarchy and argumentative attitude. The ref played a bigger part in the game because of this and the visitors were lucky to leave the field with 11 players after their goalkeeper threw a few punches at " just smack me on the nose Martin" just after he bundled the ball over the line. Despite all the aggravation from the visitors, Woodborough settled into their stride and ran out comfortable winners. Some mention has to go to Graham who netted 5 and Harry who scored 2. Nick will also remember his contribution with a "shot" on goal from well in his own half that the keeper managed to misjudge and see bounce over his head into the goal. Great result, lets keep up the momentum.

02/10/04 WUFC 2 - 1 Linby MW

25/09/04 WUFC 4 - 1 Racing Athletic

18/09/04 WUFC 4-3 County Nalgo Match report from Tom Meeks

After cruising to a 3-0 lead in the first half by a goal from Malc, an own goal and 1 from Matt Crabtree we won this game 4-3. A long ball from the opposition put their striker through to make it 3-1 but a goal from Graham later on helped us regain a 3 goal lead. Nalgo managed a fightback, converting 2 penalties past the keeper. 3 or 4 bookings were picked up today as the ref lost a degree of control over the game, threatening to abandon the game after local fan Charlie called him a "bald bugger". The great start to the season continues.

11/09/04 WUFC 4-3 Caribbean Cavaliers ll

After going behind early in the game, Woodborough fought back to get on level terms when Adam Barnes steered in a cross from the left. Further pressure on the Carrib's  defence resulted in Marvin putting Utd in front after a great cross from Bovy. The game was not going to be a classic and it came down to whoever battled the hardest. At half time Utd were 3-2 up but the Carrib's drew level after their centre forward ran onto a long ball and gave Sean no chance with a strike into the top of the net. Woodborough were not going to give up though, and Adam Small came on as sub and blasted one in to take the game 4-3. Great result which makes it three wins out of three. Its not easy to change the side in a close game and let all the subs have a run out, so thanks to to everyone in the squad who turned up and gave the stand in manager a headache with team selection.

08/09/09 WUFC 3-1 Keyworth Utd lll

Only watched the first half and could see that Woodborough were clearly on top though trailing to a goal gifted to Keyworth through a miss-placed back pass. It seemed only a matter of time before Woodborough would get on the score sheet, and it was no surprise to find out they eventually ran out 3-1 winners. Keep up the good work on Saturday against the Carrib's in the first home game of the season.

04/09/04 WUFC 2-0 Old Bemrosians Report from Tom Meeks

Not sure how to start this report i'm afraid. Firstly, it was nice to get a Derby away match out the way this early in the season. A very encouraging start from the team as we dominated the match, with Sean bailing us out with some quality saves during the game. Very little got past our defence and we battled well to stay in the game. Adam Barnes managed to score our first goal after a flick on from Linford eventually left Adam with a tap in at the near post. We battled well throughout the game and hung on to our lead, with loads of work from Marv in the middle. I put the ball through to Alastair with 5 mins to go and he finished at the 2nd attempt after his shot was saved. So a good start to the season with a win and a clean sheet... bring on the next game!

WUFC - Midland Amateur Alliance Season 2004/2005
