10/04/04 Lost 6-1 Wollaton Match report from Tom
Top of the league away from home was never going to be an easy match and playing a successful team the scoreline probably wasn't that suprising against the mighty borough. But we did very well today, the effort was there along with some decent passing... so the scoreline wasn't really a fair reflection of today. We were 3-0 down at half time, the last goal coming from Glen, who slotted the ball into our own net nicely. Matt Crabtree scored early in the second half after a good move but we were extremely vulnerable after going with 3 men at the back and went on to lose the game heavily. Adam Small went off injured early on after catching a boot in the face- probably a big factor in losing today.
My last game of the season today, so let's hope we finish strongly by
beating Clinphone in our last game and not finish bottom- better times
to come! Well done to Daz for arranging the team this season, also
well done to Matt Williamson for sorting the players out and taking it
seriously- what we badly needed. Also a massive well done to the
players who saw the season out with us and didn't give up half way
through- particularly Mark Beeby, Adam Small, the 2 Crabtrees, Nick
Wiltshire, Adam Barnes and Josh Selwood who all had very good seasons
amongst others.
03/04/04 Lost 3-2 West Bridgeford Report from Tom
Uphill and against the wind in the first half, so you could say we
did well to be 2-0 down at the break. A long range shot beat Ben in
goal, as did a penalty later in the half, where the opposite player
stood on the ball and fell over, but was enough to convince the ref.
We conceded again in the second half after some poor marking but we
didn't give up and were shortly back in the game after a great half
volley from Josh after Adam Small kneed the ball over the defence
for him. West Bridgford's keeper made a great save from Matt
Crabtree from close range, then with around 10 mins to go but
he managed to score when he hit the ball first time from the edge of
the area, putting it in the top left corner. Two of the best goals
all season came in today's match but it wasn't enough. Mentions to
Matt C, Glen, the 2 Adams and myself who all played well today, also
a mention to Matt Willo for no apparent reason... he came on when we
were 3-0 down, as did Steve, so you could argue that they changed
the game I suppose! Quick hello to the referee too- would just like
to point out that only 1 goal of the 5 was scored in the net he
didn't approve of today- hope it held up alright for ya! Top of the
league away next week for my final game of the season- 3 points in
the bag!
13/03/04 Won 3-0 Clinphone Match report from Tom Unbeaten in 5 games now as we won this poor but eventful match. We cruised to a 3-0 lead in the first half and it was a matter of not being complacent and giving the lead away. Our first goal was an own goal where their keeper missed a pass-back and it ran into the goal. Then our second came when Josh intercepted a pass on the halfway line, was through on goal and rounded the keeper to score. Greg finished well later on when he put away the rebound from Nick Wiltshire's shot.
The poor referee for this match who refused to let the game flow,
randomly sent Ben off in goal for abusive language. Then 5 minutes later
Steve got sent off for swearing at an opponent- he lasted 7 minutes at
right-mid after coming on as a sub. We battled well and our goal
was hardly tested.
6/03/04 Won 2-0 Racing Athletic Match report from Tom
Today's away win saw Woodborough's unbeaten run stretch to 4 games- the
best run in 2 years i think! Good chances in the first half by myself
and Adam Crabtree were missed but Adam Barnes mopped up the opposition
keeper's failed attempt at dealing with a low cross and put us 1-0 up.
In the second half we sealed the victory with 20mins to go when Adam
Barnes' shot fell to Matt Williamson who put away a deadly finish from 3
yards out. Suppose i should mention... good game from Ben in goal,
pulling off a great double-save to keep us in the lead.
...There's the match report Steve, the win seemed fairly easy to get
today, perhaps coz of a solid goalie, and the fact i only played half
the match! The lads have been moaning that Matt Crabtree's stats aren't
quite right... he's scored 2 own goals and given away a penalty this
season
18/02/04 Drew 1-1 County Nalgo Match report from Tom
Woodborough were the better team today but only a point to show for it. I
came close to scoring early on but sadly I can't finish, we then conceded
mid-way in the first half by a miskicked goal that went in off the post.
Second half we had the wind in our favour and Glenn came close to
equalising with a header. Matt Crabtree managed to earn us a point though
after battling for a shot at goal... Greg hit the post in the dying
minutes after turning well to shoot. Most players did well and were
unlucky not to get 3 points and off the bottom of the league.
14/02/04 Drew 2-2 Brunts O.B. Match report from Tom Meeks
"After the way this game started, we did well to get a point from this
match. We weren't sure how but we were 2-0 down within the first 20 mins.
After a period of sustained pressure, Matt Crabtree scored directly from a
corner as we continued to dominate. We picked up where we left off in the
second half, and managed to equalise after a great through-ball from Adam
Barnes put Josh through on goal to finish well. It was a case of hanging
on towards the end of the game, perhaps riding our luck a bit- but we got
the result we deserved. Following a rumour that some players will be
looking at the website this week, I suppose I'd better mention some of
them! Gaz's second game for the club today proved that he is definitely
the best keeper we've had since Matt Williamson, good performances from
our 3 Adams, good finish (and mouthing-off) from Josh, good management
from Matt Willo and good goal from Matt Crabtree (who I'd give
man-of-the-match). Where would we be if it wasn't for out Matts and Adams?
No match next week so that'll be 3 weeks unbeaten!"
07/02/04 Won 6-2 Old Elizabethans. What did I say last week? I knew that if the team played as they did against Southwell a win would not be far away. Great to get all three points so congratulations to the players for their perseverance . Report from Tom
Today's match was close until the last 15 mins or so. We were downhill in
the first half, Josh tapped in a rebound off the bar from Greg's header.
Then not long later Martin Wood popped up for a near post header to get us
to 2-0 up. We then conceded an unlucky goal after clearing it off the
line, with the ball bouncing under the keeper. We went in 3-1 up and it
stayed that way for much of the second half until Old Elizabethans scored
courtesy of a Matt Crabtree own goal. With less than 10 minutes to go
after that it was a case of hanging on, but we ended up scoring 3 more,
Nick Wiltshire wrapping up the scoring to make it 6-2. Great effort from
the team made sure of the win today... things now looking better.
31/01/04 Lost 3-2 Southwell Report from Steve Woodborough were mugged by Southwell who stole all the points from this entertaining game. The first half ended with Southwell 2-1 up having played with the advantage of the wind. Josh was on the score sheet after completing a great move by Utd. The second half was dominated by Woodborough who were playing some good passing football in the difficult conditions. Adam scored an equaliser with a header from a corner, then late in the game Southwell managed to break away and snatch a goal. It was heartbreak for Woodborough who have yet to win this season. If Utd can retain the form shown in this game then the elusive win won't be far away. 24/01/04 Lost 5-4 Racing Athletic. Match report from Tom Meeks
A strong Woodborough side eventually lost this game which we really
should've won. After cruising to a 3-0 lead by 2 decent goals from
Josh and one from Adam Barnes, we went in at the break 3-2 up. After going
4-2 up thanks to Chris's headed goal early in the second half we let
it slip and lost 5-4. In the late stages Josh put the ball over the line
but the goal was not given and Nick hit the far post direct from a corner.
I blame the bad pitch, stamina, the absence of a proper goalkeeper and the
lack of substitutions made for losing this game! Good to see a decent
squad turnout this week.
17/01/04 Lost 5-2 Radcliff. The game slipped away at 2-1 when Utd were having plenty of possession. A five minute spell from Radcliff ensured all the points went home with them. 10/01/04 Drew 2-2 Nottinghamshire Report from Tom Unlucky to come away with just a point today after dominating most of the game. With the slope of the pitch is a big factor. Having gone uphill in the first half, we went in 1-0 down at half time. Early in the 2nd half Ben put a free kick from out wide into the top left-hand corner, only for Nott's to go ahead later with a great header past the very agile, but unlucky Matt in goal. Then i decided to put some effort in and chased onto a loose ball one of the defenders decided to let bounce over him... took it wide of the keeper and put it into the net to earn us a point. Again this week the Smalls were probably our best players, some of the fans may have noticed Ben played well today... but i didn't! Let's see what happens next week
03/01/04 Lost 3-2 West Bridgeford Report from Tom
After conceding early to a good strike in the first half, we played some
decent football with the Smalls battling away constantly in the middle of
the park. We then conceded again before the break when one of their
players headed in at the far post unmarked. We were pretty poor in the
second half until Greg and Alastair came on, but we conceded another when Daz
turned on the ball as last man, giving it to 1 of the 2 strikers running
at him who then went on to score. We pulled one back later when Al crossed
a ball in for Glenn to turn in, then got another when Adam Small put in a
decent ball for Greg to head in from close range. It clearly wasn't our
day- again.
13/12/03 Lost 7-2 V Notts Match report from Tom Hi Steve, another match report, bad news i'm afraid. Having been 2-0 up at half-time, we faced the 2nd half going uphill and into the sun. Josh opened the scoring with a header and Alastair finished to make it 2-0 in the first half. I think it was Josh that gave away a penalty in the first half but i'm not sure, it went over the bar though. Early in the second half Adam hit the bar and ever since one of their crosses bounced over Matt into the goal then the scoreline just got worse. We ended up losing 7-2. We had very few chances but took the ones we were given and sadly... we got caned.
29/11/03 Lost 4-2 V Wollaton Match report from Tom
A good performance from the team today. Everyone put the effort in and we
earned plenty of praise from the opposition. After going 1-0 down, Ben
equalised with a volley, Ricki later had a goal disallowed on his
last game before leaving and Alastair scored in a goal mouth scramble to
get a late consolation goal. Special mention to Matt Williamson who scored
an own goal today.
15/11/03 Lost 5-2 Home V Kirkby AC. Better performance in the second half and the team were able to press Kirkby onto their back foot for long periods. Ben and Josh were the scorers. 08/11/03 Lost 5-1 Home V Brunts Not a good performance 25/10/03 Lost 5-1 Away at Southwell Match report from Tom Meeks We played at Southwell and lost 5-1 although we didn't really deserve to. Our passing improved after the break and we created some chances but we just didn't have the luck on the day. Ricki scored our goal late on, and dedicated it to me- nice one. He played well when he came on, as did most players during the game... Nick and Adam Small did well. So probably an unfair scoreline but we'll give someone a good beating soon.
18/10/03 Lost 1-0 in the cup V Nottinghamshire 04/10/03 Lost 4-0 in the cup 27/09/03 WUFC 4 - 5 County Nalgo A disastrous start resulted in WUFC being behind after one minute to a soft goal. The game improved for the home side and after a good spell, Woodborough managed to equalize from a corner sent in with precision from Nick. This set the tone for the rest of the half and another two corners resulted in two more goals for United. Nick's delivery was spot on, and the goal tally at half time was two for Josh and one each for Scotty and Greg, all from Nick's corners. The second half turned into a nightmare for WUFC as the tide slowly turned. Nalgo managed to recover and after some poor defensive play by the Woodborough team, the away side managed to claw their way back into a game that should have been decided at half time. The end result was a big disappointment for Woodborough, but lets take the positive from this game. When was the last time we led by three goals and scored four goals in the same match? Training on the 4th as there is no league fixture. Lets start to put things right. 20/09/03 WUFC 2 - 3 Ratcliffe Match report from Tom A decent performance today and everyone put enough effort in for us to win the game, unfortunately we were unlucky. Josh scored a first half penalty to put it to 1-0, then Adam Barnes scored with a headed corner late in the 2nd half after going down 2-1. Unfortunately they went and scored another goal and beat us, but good performances from everyone today! 13/09/03 WUFC 1 - 4 Ashfield 95 Match report from Tom We were quite easily beaten in the end, despite probably being the better team in the first half. Our defence wasn't as solid today as it has been in the last 2 games but we've missed quite a few players through injury at the moment so things will improve before too long. Adam Small man-of-the-match i think, Alastair Gunn got us the consolation goal in the last minute.Only a short match report Steve, i notice more things when i'm playing to be honest! Don't forget to mark down Rob's own goal and Al's goal today and we'll win next week if i'm back, no probs. Matt had a quality game in goal and chris might lose his place if he's not careful. 06/09/03 Old Elizabethans 1 - 0 WUFC Match report from Tom Meeks Their second-half goal was well taken and we had few chances to score. We turned up with no subs today and Matt got injured just before half time. So we struggled to find enough players to fill the right positions today and we definitely lacked a striker but despite what Daz said to us (quite unfairly) after the match i thought we actually did put the effort in that we needed to even if it didn't show in our passing. We're on the verge of being a team capable of winning games now but lack organisation and squad commitment. No need to panic at the moment though, it can still be resolved and a quick reminder that we'd conceded 22 goals already at this point last season, so far we've conceded 1 so if we keep putting the effort in we'll start banging the goals and get winning games. 30/09/2003 Kirkby AC 0 - 0 WUFC Promising start for the new season from Woodborough. It is always difficult to predict how the first game will go and it is great to keep a clean sheet. Match report from Tom Meeks:- " I'll start by saying this performance was far better than any we put in last year. Without having to rely on anyone in particular, the whole team put in strong performances, our goalkeeper Chris in particular. We managed to dominate during the first half with having plenty of shots and with the second half was more a case of hanging on, with us giving away loads of free kicks (where I took a beating in the wall). So things are looking up, provided Martin keeps the subs interested by giving them a game in the future! Then we can look to have a squad and a hopefully a decent season. "
