Results during season 2002/2003 MAA Premier Division

12/04/03 WUFC 2 - 11 Old Elizabethans Match report from Tom:-

Back to losing ways unfortunately this week, with Ricki and Ben and a goalie all missing. After equalising twice in the first half with Josh lobbing the keeper and Trigger scoring from the spot, we went in 3-2 at half time and evidently let the game slip away in the second half. We conceded about 6 from corners alone. I was disappointed with my performance and maybe some others were... but the result didn't really matter, we'll have to look to next season.

05/04/03 WUFC 1 - 1 Nottinghamshire Match report from Tom:- "Two games unbeaten now as the season draws to an end. Rob buried Ben's corner in the first half and this was more or less the only chance we had all game. Nottinghamshire equalised in the second half but the team battled hard and earned the point. A special mention to Ricki's defending... he managed to head the ball onto our own crossbar for it bounce back for the clearance, his later atempt at an own goal went just over the bar. Good performance from the lads."

15/03/03 WUFC 6 - 2 Bassingfield It has been a long time coming but Woodborouh finally managed their first 3 pointer of the season. The pitch was in a terrible state after last weeks mud bath, and it was impossible to keep control of the ball. WUFC went into uncharted waters taking a three goal lead, only to see Bassingfield snatch two back by half time. The home side went further in front from the kick off and managed to ascert themselves with another two goals later in the game. The scorers for WUFC were Rob, Josh and Daz with one each, and a hat-trick for Chris. Tom Meeks had to go off with a head injury in the last minute, and we all hope he recovers quickly from his trauma. Keep up the good work lads!

08/03/03 WUFC 1 - 6 Carribs. It looked a better game than last weeks match despite the heavy conditions. Woodborough managed to hold onto the ball for much longer periods up front and in midfield, and also managed to string a few passes together. Ricki managed to get off the mark with a header in the first half, and at the interval the home side were still in contention. Tom's match report:-

Beaten again, but compared with the 17-0 thrashing we got last time round it makes this scoreline look much better. After going 1-0 down from a well-worked goal, Ricki popped up from a corner at the back post to head the ball past Barry White in goal. I personally thought the ref was poor for the first half, when we played our best football and were probably the better team, with good performances from most players. We went in 2-1 down at half time and conceded the rest in the second half. Bassingfield next week is a must-win game... we can't finish the season with no wins, we don't deserve it.

01/03/03 WUFC 1 - 8 Steelers.  Toms verdict..It wasn't to be today... although we went 1-0 up and were only 2-1 down at the break we had our usual spell of 20 minutes in the 2nd half where
most lose count of how many goals we let in. Our goal came from Josh's
penalty after Daz was brought down by their keeper.

22/02/03  WUFC 0 - 6 Bracken Park A good first half performance from the home side left them trailing   by one goal at the interval. It wasn't until after an hour that the visitors managed to begin finding holes in the WUFC defence and snatched 5 goals late on in the game. Woodborough will have to find their goal scoring boots to keep the pressure off at the back.

15/02/03 Magdala 5 - 1 Toms match report...

Starting with only 10 men, but welcoming Ben back and playing on a nice
pitch, our work rate and passing was better than i've seen before and
the team performed very well throughout the match. I had a shot cleared
off the line in the first half and we had plenty of other chances to
score, we went in 1-0 down though. After conceding another early in the
2nd half, Josh finally managed to do what he's been trying all season-
to dribble round just about everyone from kick-off and score.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be as we conceded a further 3 (sloppy) goals.
A good performance from all the players though.

08/02/03 Bracken Park 11 - 1 WUFC This result left Woodborough to concentrate on their league form which has been improving of late. Come on lads, lets have a win.

02/02/03 Wollaton 3 - 0 WUFC

24/01/2003 Trent Uni were the visitors to the "Lane" and Woodborough were looking to get 3 points from the match. Uni had other ideas and swept into a 3-0 lead after 20 mins. The signs were not promising when Matt Tommo had to go off early on, but against the odds and with Uni getting a bit cocky, Woodborough scored two great goals. Greg lobbed the keeper from 30 yards and Tom powered in another so at half time it was 2-3. The second half was a closely fought contest with each side netting one apiece, and despite Woodborough's late pressure it was Uni who won 4-3.

Tom's perspective...

A bad start to this game ended up in an unpredictable final score. I thought we had gone back to our ways of losing by huge margins... after conceding 3 goals relatively early on. Then I pulled one back from a corner, followed by a long-range effort from Greg, who spotted the keeper off his line. We conceded another almost instantly in the second half, taking it to 4-2. Easton popped up later on to knock in our 3rd at the far post... The game finished 4-3, but Trent probably deserved the win.

18/01/2003 Wollaton snatched the result 1-0 with a first half penalty. Very few chances fell to the home side in a match which was not one of the best to watch.

11/01/2003 Gallant effort from Woodborough not quite enough against Ashland Rovers. Great to see some of the old school strutting their stuff along side some of the youngsters, but in the end Ashland ran out 4-2 winners. Chris Bovey-Briggs put the home side one up, a score line which was deserved. Late in the second half, Ashland replied with four in quick succession to kill off Woodborough's brave effort. Glenn replied for Woodborough with a headed corner. Thanks to Spud Walker, Chinny Tommo and Kadge Kirk for solid old timer performances. Next week oxygen will be available at half time.

Report from Tom Meeks Yet another improved performance from Woodborough today, thanks to some much-needed experience in the team. We were 1-0 up at half time after Chris B lobbed the keeper. Ashland left it late to reply with 3 successive goals in the second half. Greg [Davies] scored even later on with a glancing header from Ben's corner, but the end of the match was made less exciting when Ashland finished us off with another goal. 4-2 against the top team in the league wasn't a bad score considering we probably deserved better, its quite possible we'll escape relegation with performances like today's. Bring on the Carribeans!

21/12/2002 OE's come out on top. Match report from Tom Meeks

A much improved performance from Woodborough today, in a match where we probably had more chances than any other game so far. Lapses in concentration from the start found us 2-0 down within minutes and it took us at least 20mins to get into the game. With us 5-0 down at half time and the second half uphill the match looked over, but we battled on and managed to score 3 (including Ben's deliberate goal direct from a corner). Jim got our first with Josh scoring a peno later on. In the future we ought to concentrate from the start and not concede goals from our own kick-offs, we should be good at them now- we've had over 70 this season! Anyway, I'm sure it was a decent match to watch, just wish it was more worthwhile for the players...

14/12/2002 Woodborough still looking for a win. Lady Bay beat home side Woodborough 5-0 on a dim cold and wet Saturday afternoon. On the plus side, Woodborough fielded mostly an inexperienced side in what is a transitional period in the clubs history, and so long as the young lads keep plugging away and gain that experience, there is potential at the club to do better later in this season and next.

30/11/2002 Match report from Tom Meeks " Recently we lost 4-0 to Trent University.A great defensive performance from the team meant we were only 1-0 down at the break. We had the chance to equalise from Ben's close range free-kick in the first half but was tipped wide for a corner. The best chance of the second half fell to me where I put the ball just wide after running through the defence...oops! We then went on to concede a further 3, perhaps due to stamina, but more likely because Trent dominated the game. A great performance from the latest keeper (don't even know his name!) good performances all round the team today, especially the back 4 (dare I say myself?) and Ben to pick out a few.  The team is slowly improving, we might even win a game by the end of the season!"

12/10/2002 Another difficult game for Woodborough who for the third time could only field 9 players (and only 8 for most of the second half). Bracken Park had not yet dropped a point, and it looked like a hard Saturday afternoon of football for the away side. That Woodborough came away with a point after drawing the match 2-2 was down to some heroic defending and a sharp forward line. Josh scored twice and Ben Wood kept Woodborough in the game with a series of saves. Well done Woodborough!
