Portsmouth Corporation 201 - RV4649
A.E.C 661T Trolleybus built 1934
English Electric 50 seat double decker
Owned by: Portsmouth City Museums & Record Service
This was one of fifteen prototype trolleybuses purchased for evaluation purposes, prior to a baulk order being placed.
It was originally numbered 1, but later had two hundred added to its fleet number, together with the rest of the trolleybus fleet, in 1939.
This was intended to bring to the attention of following bus drivers that they were behind a trolleybus rather than a motor-bus, if they were driving
a trolleybus themselves it was important for them to know in case they contemplated overtaking! No. 201 was withdrawn in 1958 and stored at Eastney
depot before being sold locally in 1960. Later that year it was presented to the Montague Motor Museum at Beaulieu but unfortunately it was displayed in the
open air and the timber framework has suffered accordingly. Portsmouth City Musuems aquired the vechicle for their transport collection in 1972.
RV4649 has joined the CPPTD Collection June 09 moving from The Milestones Musuem.
