1962 was a memorable year
… internationally there was the Cuban Missile Crisis
… nationally PM Harold MacMillan ruthlessly rejigged his Cabinet
(after the Tories suffered a major by-election defeat)
… and locally the Rotary Club of Blaby Oadby & Wigston was chartered on 22nd November.
The work of formation had started in 1961 when the Leicester Club agreed to cede the territory that covered a vast suburban area to the south and west of the city. The BOW Club (as it became known) started life with 30 Rotarians recruited from the local three townships.
The Club prospered and then in 1974-75 went through the challenge of being split into three! With the Rotary movement growing strongly … a survey of the commercial and retail businesses of the Blaby, Oadby and Wigston (BOW) area was commissioned … and it was decreed that three Clubs should emerge from the original BOW nucleus. Oadby was to become a separate Club … and two new Clubs were to be formed in Wigston and Blaby. It was decision time for the members of the BOW Club. Around 13 of them opted to move to one of the two new Clubs … but once the trauma was past … a vigorous recruitment campaign ensured that membership of the Rotary Club of Oadby was soon back to par.
Today Oadby is a Club with around 47 members … which membership includes one Past District Governor (PDG). During its 40 years of service a helping hand has been given in the formation of the Inner Wheel Club of Oadby (1964 - to date) and to the Rotaract Club of Oadby (1981-2003).
The emphasis in the Club is on fellowship and enjoying your Rotary. Members share a common interest in working together on a variety of projects, mainly of a local focus, but also nationally and internationally.
Weekly lunchtime meetings are geared to the interests of members, and include a talk on a subject of general interest by an invited speaker.
If you are a Rotarian wishing to join us at one of our meetings, give our Attendance Officer a ring, and he will make the necessary arrangements.
