Welcome to the unofficial Yamaha DX7 resource centre, (which replaces www.thedx7.co.uk).  The purpose of this site is to collect together as many of the most relevant Yamaha DX7 web-sites,  so that you don't have to go searching!  You will also find sounds and software here.

According to the Yamaha TX7 manual ( yep, TX7 ), Yamaha DX7's with serial number 1001~24880 and 25125~26005 will have problems with the Aftertouch option, over MIDI.  This is because their operating system ROM's were programmed before MIDI was standardised across all manufacturers.   It is worth asking a potential seller for the serial number, before you commit.    One of my DX7's has an early serial number, and it also struggles to send System Exclusive information which can be easily interpreted by patch librarians etc.

...So what has happened to the DX7?

The DX7 itself hasn't been made since the end of the eighties, but developments such as Yamaha's DX200 module are keeping FM synthesis up there with all the contemporary stuff.  Who knows what future products may be introduced, but one product keeping the spirit of the DX7 and FM synthesis very much alive is Native Instruments' superb products,  FM7 and more recently FM8.

This is a Software Synth DX7 (and much much more).  Hearing is believing..... Please Click Here to go to the FM7/8 site.
