The Candidate:  Stephen Glennon

Profile

Age: 50

Job: Production Manager

Steve works and lives in Stevenage. He is a loan parent, his partner Janice, also an active socialist, died 11 years ago. Their son Sean is 12 years old.

Steve has lived in Stevenage since 1972, and moved into his council house in Bedwell in 1980. He has always been a committed trade unionist, and at present is the Secretary of the Stevenage Metal Mechanics sector of the Amicus union.

Steve was expelled from the Stevenage labour party in the late 80’s for being an active socialist. As he pointed out at the time, the expulsions would lead to a massive shift to the right for the Labour Party.

He led many campaigns to save the NHS in general and Lister in particular. He organised 2 half-day general strikes and marches of thousands of Stevenage trade unionists in the 80’s when Thatcher was attacking the NHS.

Later he was a national organiser of the Anti Poll Tax Federation and the biggest post war demonstration in Britain, which was the beginning of the end of the poll tax and Thatcher.

Steve has always defended jobs and services, and helped any worker in struggle. He is now putting himself forward to continue this fight and defeat the new Thatcherites, the Blairites! New Labour are new Tories.

Steve Says

“The rich always betray the poor, so how can a millionaire represent the ordinary people of Stevenage?

My Pledge

"I pledge to only take the average wage of a Stevenage skilled worker, donating the rest to campaigns to save jobs and services.”
