Introduction

I started writing this story in early 1999 mainly as something to put in my web page and so anyone who is remotely interested in me and my family can have a read. Personal histories of 'non-celebrities' like me are pretty boring but it has always struck me as sad that many people of my generation never attempt to record their stories. So, for what its worth, here's mine.

I'll probably fill in 'blanks', either as I remember them or if I read the text and decide to say more about any particular episode.

In the Beginning...

I was born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, England on 12 January 1949. I have an elder brother, Francis Arthur, who was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, on 4 May 1947. My father's name was Francis Henry Davidson and my mother's name was Ivy Davidson (nee Green). In August 1950 my mother contracted poliomyelitis (there was a polio epidemic in Britain at that time) and died within a few days on 23 August 1950. Sadly, I have no recollection of my mum - only some old photos. Dad died in November 2000.

My Father and Mother had both served in the Royal Navy during World War II - Dad served on minesweepers but I'm not sure what Mum did. After the war, my Father went to sea as a fisherman, sailing out of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, but he eventually left the sea and worked for many years on the Fish Docks as a fish filleter. Later in his working life he left the Docks and worked at a major Humber Bank chemical company, Laporte, as fitter's mate. Dad married his second wife, Brenda, in April 1970. They enjoyed 30 years of happily married life until Dad sadly died on Friday, 17th November 2000. Brenda continued in good health until Christmas 2006 when she began treatment for cancer. She had an operation which was successful but sadly the cancer returned a year later and she died on 27 September 2007. Fortunately she didn't actually suffer from the cancer itself but the chemotherapy was far too aggressive for her and she couldn't tolerate the treatment.
