THIS photograph was passed down to Joan Riggs of Albuquerque, USA (nee Shuttleworth), from her father Frank Shuttleworth, who was Hercules Dowie's great grandson. Unfortunately, Joan and her family are unsure exactly who the person in the picture actually is, but recalls that her father used to say he was a "sea captain".
THE picture could well be Hercules Dowie, but is equally likely to be any of Frank Shuttleworth's (1859 - 1926) ancestors: William Shuttlworth (born c.1824), John Shuttleworth (1796 - aft. 1861), Hercules Dowie (1780 - 1851), Robert Tonge (c1833 - 1911), Ralph Tonge (1804 - aft. 1881) or John Fairhurst (born c. 1801).
