When VdGS Music Editions were first issued in the 1960s, they were called Supplementary Publications. Their purpose was to make British viol music available in good value playable editions; they were carefully edited by enthusiasts from original sources and written out in clear manuscript. There are now over 150 titles in the catalogue, and these have recently been typeset and are now available with scores. Parts have been set out with the player's needs foremost - where possible the parts are still available in manuscript as an alternative to typeset and alternative clefs can be requested. Many VdGS Music Editions have organ parts.

In the last forty years many works by major viol composers have been re-published in collected editions. The VdGS publications saves players from having to buy a whole collection in order to find out whether they like that composer. They can buy one or two titles from a collection which are generally fairly cheap and often include an organ part. Unattributed compositions and those composers with few surviving pieces are less popular with publishers and are often only available as VdGS Music Editions. The series includes some of the best of British viol music.

New editions are published once or twice a year and are available for an initial period to VdGS members at 10% discount. The series is edited by Virginia Brookes: telephone +44 (0) 1865 242591 or e-mail the distributor: Stephen Pegler e-mail me who welcomes suggestions for suitable publications of any viol related music or submissions of editions for publication. New Editions in 2006:

ME214 - Anon - 3 Fantasies from the Dublin manuscripts a 4
These three fantasies from the six in the Dublin manuscript are great pieces to play and it is good to have more 4 part fantasias written for two trebles. The remainder of the set will follow next year.
Member's Price £4.20 (normal price £6.30) Tr Tr T B Fairly Difficult

ME215 - Mico Duos for treble & bass viols
This new edition of the four excellent duos by Mico under separate cover is supplemented by a 5th which Andrew Ashbee has tentatively attributed to Mico.
Member's Price £3.30 (normal price £4.95) Tr B Fairly Difficult

ME216 - Edward Blanks - Fantasia a 5 & Tallis - "A Solfinge Songe"
There is little music by Tallis for instruments, so when we were asked to publish "A Solfinge Songe" by Thomas Tallis we were delighted by the idea. We are grateful to Theo and Kitty Wyatt for permission to use their edition for recorders as a starting point. Virginia has cleverly found a companion fantasia with similar low instrumentation (two basses) from Edward Blanks who was active around the same period.
Member's Price £2.80 (normal price £4.20) Tr T T B B Medium Difficulty

ME217 - Anon - 3 Fantasias a 5
These three unattributed fantasias were played at a recent Viola da Gamba society meeting, at which Andrew Ashbee asked the audience to use their skill and judgement to identify the composer. Sadly they remain "Anon" but they deserve to be in the repertoire and we are glad to publish them.
Member's price £5.10 (normal price £7.65) Tr Tr T T B Medium Difficulty

ME218 - Byrd - Fantasia 4/G (In manus tuas) & 7 Dances
This collection brings together one Fantasia (recently the subject of a VdGS lecture and article in The Viol), three Pavans and four Galliards in reconstructions by Richard Rastall. The dances have been published before by Richard in his 5-part set, but he believes these particular ones are better as 4-part pieces and we are happy to make them available. The 2nd part fits well on an alto viol (in A).
Member's price £5.50 (normal price £8.25) Tr Tr/T T B Medium Difficulty

To use this catalogue - click on a page according to how many parts the piece is written for. The price shown is for non-members (GB VdGS members receive a price list with their newsletter, but they can estimate prices by subtracting one third). You can check which it is, and whether you already have it, by clicking the title of the piece to hear (if you have a midi player) the first few bars - normally of just the top part.

Music Editions are produced, printed and distributed by volunteers in the society as a benefit to members and they will be happy to offer advice on these editions and on published alternatives. To order, send an e-mail to Stephen Pegler e-mail me or fill in the order form and post to the address on the form.
