When VdGS Music Editions were first issued in the 1960s, they were
called Supplementary Publications. Their purpose was to make British
viol music available in good value playable editions; they were carefully
edited by enthusiasts from original sources and written out in clear
manuscript. There are now over 150 titles in the catalogue, and these
have recently been typeset and are now available with scores. Parts
have been set out with the player's needs foremost - where possible
the parts are still available in manuscript as an alternative to typeset
and alternative clefs can be requested. Many VdGS Music Editions have
organ parts.
In the last forty years many works by major viol composers have been
re-published in collected editions. The VdGS publications saves players
from having to buy a whole collection in order to find out whether
they like that composer. They can buy one or two titles from a collection
which are generally fairly cheap and often include an organ part.
Unattributed compositions and those composers with few surviving pieces
are less popular with publishers and are often only available as VdGS
Music Editions. The series includes some of the best of British viol
music.
New editions are published once or twice a year and are available
for an initial period to VdGS members at 10% discount. The series
is edited by Virginia Brookes: telephone +44 (0) 1865 242591 or e-mail

New Editions in Autumn 2008:
ME220 Christopher Simpson - 5 Duets for Division Viols (Ed. Ian Gaskell)
These 5 duets for bass viols are in a manuscript in the Bodleian library. Ian Gaskell typeset them for his own study and enjoyment and then offered them to the Society and we are very glad to publish them. A score is included showing the original clefs but in the parts Ian has substituted the Alto (C3) clef for the C1 clef.

ME 221 Richard Nicholson – When Jesus Sat at Meat (Ed. Virginia Brookes)
This attractive verse anthem is published in a transposed version probably more attractive to groups who are short of tenor singers, however the parts are also in the original clefs which work well for viols.

ME 222 Jenkins - 9 Airs for two trebles and bass (Ed. Andrew Ashbee)
We believe these airs from the end of John Merro’s instrumental collection GB-Ob, Mus. Sch. D245-7 have not been published before. We expect they will be popular, despite going quite high (d”) in the treble part.
Price £4.80 Tr Tr B Medium difficulty
ME 223 Anon [Jenkins?] - Divisions on a ground for treble, bass and continuo Nos. 1 & 2 with realised keyboard part (Ed Andrew Ashbee)
Andrew Ashbee writes:” I am grateful to Peter Holman for alerting me to six anonymous sets of divisions in Bodleian Library. They conclude a collection in which the remainder of the identified pieces are by the continental composers Bertali and Cazzati. Peter queried whether these six sets might be by Jenkins, since he could think of no other likely composer. I am sure he is right and these pieces for 'Treble & Basse to a Ground' are a welcome addition to an otherwise very sparse repertory in England. “

ME 224 Iohn Coprario - Fantasia à 5 VdGS No. 53
reconstructed from The Blossom Partbooks by Ross W. Duffin,
The Blossom Partbooks are an imperfectly preserved anthology of vocal and instrumental music, apparently dating from the second decade of the seventeenth century, and now in the library at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Among its myriad motets, anthems, madrigals, fantasies, and untexted Italian works, are unique fantasies by John Coprario and John Milton, Sr. The Altus, Quintus, and Sextus partbooks have been missing from the set since it first came to light; this edition of the Coprario Fantasia marks the first of the unique instrumental works to be recovered from the manuscript.
