John Russell was a founder member of the near-legendary art group BANK (1990-2000) and as part of that collective practice was responsible for the production of a series of influential exhibitions throughout the 1990’s. BANK artworks and publications from this period were subsequently exhibited in Protest and survive (2000) at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Century City (2001) at Tate Modern, London; and Bring the war home (2006) at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York & QED Gallery, Los Angeles. A book documenting BANK projects was produced by Black Dog Publishing in 2000.

Since leaving BANK, Russell has featured in numerous international exhibitions, including: GSK Contemporary (2008/9) at the Royal Academy, London; Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2006); Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2003); Wayne Winner at the South London Gallery, London (2002) and Becks Futures II (2001) at ICA, London featuring Twenty women play the drums topless, a performance produced in collaboration with Fabienne Audéoud.

Solo exhibitions include: Explain Death to Very Young Children; OUTPOST Gallery, Norwich (2010), Ocean Pose at Matt's Gallery, London (2007); Geniess (2005) at the Norwich Art Gallery and HYPERLINK The visible and the expressible (2005) at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow.

In addition, Russell conceived, edited and designed three books Frozen Tears I-III, (2003-7) published by ARTicle Press which adopt the format of an 800-page bestseller including horror, theory and images by over 50 UK and international artists and writers.
