John
Russell was a founder member of the near-legendary art group BANK
(1990-2000) and as part of that collective practice was responsible for
the production of a series of influential exhibitions throughout the 1990’s.
BANK artworks and publications from this period were subsequently exhibited
in Protest and survive (2000) at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London;
Century City (2001) at Tate Modern, London; and Bring the war home (2006)
at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, New York & QED Gallery, Los Angeles. A book
documenting BANK projects was produced by Black Dog Publishing in 2000.
Since leaving BANK, Russell has featured in numerous international exhibitions,
including: GSK
Contemporary (2008/9) at the Royal Academy, London; Serralves Museum
of Contemporary Art, Porto (2006); Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2003); Wayne
Winner at the South London Gallery, London (2002) and Becks Futures II
(2001) at ICA, London featuring Twenty
women play the drums topless, a performance produced in collaboration
with Fabienne Audéoud.
Solo exhibitions include: Explain Death to Very Young Children; OUTPOST
Gallery, Norwich (2010), Ocean
Pose at Matt's Gallery, London (2007); Geniess
(2005) at the Norwich Art Gallery and HYPERLINK The
visible and the expressible (2005) at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow.
In addition, Russell conceived, edited and designed three books Frozen
Tears I-III, (2003-7) published by ARTicle Press which adopt the format
of an 800-page bestseller including horror, theory and images by over
50 UK and international artists and writers.
