Conservative parliamentary candidate for Ipswich, Paul West, today called on the government to introduce radical plans to curb the binge-drinking culture which is rapidly becoming common place in our towns and cities.
In addition to calling for the 24-hour drinking initiative to be scrapped, he also demanded that:
drunks be charged up to £500 for using A&E and ambulance services
alcohol sales be banned from certain general stores in local communities (but suggests reducing their business rates to compensate)
the drinks industry be levied a tax based on turnover to pay for the costs of policing the night time economy
Paul said:
"People have had enough. Only the government can't see the damage excessive alcohol is doing to our local communities. The cost of keeping order in the town centre is spiralling out of control. The cost to the health service is picked up by the taxpayer and it is about time something was done. If drunken revellers were charged for using the ambulance and A&E services they might think twice before they tip gallons of drink down their neck"
